Assistant Field Engineer

May - August 2018 • Jessup, PA

What I liked

The amount of responsibility that I was given throughout my internship. I was not treated like an intern, through out my experience. One of the goals that I made for myself, was to be able to replace my mentor by the time the summer ended. With less than a month remaining in my internship, my mentor was sent to another job site, and I was able to prove that I fulfilled my goal by the end of the summer..

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be shy when starting the internship, because the sooner you get to know more people, you are able to learn so much more, and get a lot more involved.

Environmental intern

November 2018 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

Alot of my tasks involved me to expand my knowledge and apply what I learned in school to different projects.

What I wish was different

I got out of the office more.

Advice

Try to take on as much as possible and do not be affraid to fail. At least you will learn all the different tasks going on. This way you will find what you like to do and wont be in the dark of all the things happening.

Human Resources Intern

May 2018 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

I liked how all of the work I did contributed to the greater good of the organization. I worked on real projects that were not just busy work and I had the opportunity to present my work to upper management. I worked in 4 different rotations and this summer I will be in yet another rotation. Kiewit provides so many opportunities and they work so hard to give their interns as much experience as possible.

What I wish was different

I wish they had been a little less demanding of my time during the school year. One of my rotations I did while also in school and it made it hard to balance everything. This might have just been my department because I know of other Kiewit interns who did not have as many working hours as I did.

Advice

Take all of the opportunities they offer you! I got to go on several business trips to other states which was probably my favorite opportunity! I also got to meet with upper level management and executive members because of this. Kiewit offers their interns so much, so take advantage of all of it!

Estimator

May - August 2019 • Fairfield, CA

What I liked

Well organized, large company with a tight knit family style culture. They want to do things the right way, how they should be done, rather than the fast or cheap way.

What I wish was different

I spent my entire internship as an estimator at the regional office. It would have been nice to get some field experience, but I will get that opportunity during my next internship.

Advice

Be professional, and motivated to learn and apply the skills you pick up along the way.

Project engineer

June - September 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

They are a big company that owns and operates most of the work on the jobsite. Being in charge of self performed work and getting to determine the means and methods myself was an awesome experience that helped me as a builder.

What I wish was different

I wish i had more training and guidance as i did not have a great mentor so i was on my own to figure things out and learn. Not looking for someone to hold my hand but an experienced mentor would have increased my learning and performance tremendously

Advice

Go after what you want to do. Be persistent. And keep asking if you are not getting what you need

Field Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Johnstown, PA

What I liked

I loved my co workers and being able to get out of an office chair and actually go outside throughout the day. The work was very in front of you and rewarding when you can see the end product.

What I wish was different

I wish I had taken more weekends off

Advice

I would recommend saying yes to just about anything someone asks you to do, and to always ask questions. Saying yes opens opportunities, and asking questions is important because there is so much to learn at a job that you will never learn in school.

Design-Build Intern

June - August 2019 • Federal Way, WA

What I liked

Kiewit treats their interns extremely well. They reimbursed me for relocation and provided corporate housing for me to live in during my internship with two roommates who were also interns for the company. I got to work on a really cool project and felt like I was really part of the team. They also hosted an intern event and took us out to see a few jobsites.

What I wish was different

I wish I'd gotten to be out of the office more often, and the work I was doing was often monotonous. I wish I'd gotten to do a bit more of a variety of work.

Advice

Ask lots of questions and make sure to voice what you want to get out of your internship. If you want to go and see a job site, ask. If you're not enjoying the work you're doing, say so. They're very good at meeting your needs but they won't know you're unhappy unless you tell them. Make an effort to get to know your coworkers.

Construction Estimator Intern

May - August 2019 • Santa Fe Springs, CA

What I liked

I received a well rounded experience of the entire estimating process from start to finish.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to get out and see more of the active job sites.

Advice

I think it’s important to diversity your experience as an intern. Get out in the field one year and go in the office another year. Hey are both equally valuable and will give more insight on how the business is ran and where you see yourself fitting in.

Human Resources Intern

May 2018 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

I loved the community first and foremost ! Everyone cares about each other's success and the overall success of the company. I also liked how all of the projects I worked on made a difference for the company, they weren't just menial tasks.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have scheduled myself a bit more time to visit home, but that was my own doing.

Advice

Just always say yes to the opportunities they provide. I had the chance to go on 3 business trips to states I had never been to and I met so many amazing people and it all came about because I decided to take a risk as a freshman, move away from home and enter the adult working life!

Structural Drafter

May - August 2019 • Lenexa, KS

What I liked

Kiewit has an incredible internship program. I was doing real work on muli million and billion-dollar projects. I was treated like a full-time employee and was given the same responsibilities as one. No coffee runs or making copies. They also provide free housing just across the street from the office, so no commute and the culture are amazing. Tons of learning opportunities and you get to go to outings with the project team, baseball, soccer, BBQs, they really keep interns busy and having fun.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have started projects a little sooner in the internship, but I understand there is a training period and they have to figure out what work they want their interns to get done.

Advice

Be ready to take on the challenges given to you and ask questions.

Field/Office Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Mount Vernon, NY

What I liked

The degree of responsibility immediately assigned to you. You gain an incredible amount of experience doing hands-on work, and being held responsible for deadlines, submissions, quality of work - just like the full-time engineers.

What I wish was different

The interns are assigned to specific projects, so there was not a lot of opportunity to interact with interns throughout the company, aside from the final presentations. I wish there were more social events outside of work that were encouraged.

Advice

Be open and versatile to every opportunity. Accept the overtime opportunities, if offered. Don't become complacent with doing just what you're told; go the extra mile and find small ways to improve the traditional practices in your office/job-site.
