Kohl's

Management Intern

June - July 2019 • Watchung, NJ

What I liked

I loved being able to understand how a Kohl's store is run. You get hands on experience in different departments which allows you to understand the flow and function of the store. I was able to learn from many mentors and that is truly the best part.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to experience managing different stores because there is a variety of ways a store can be ran.

Advice

Be ready to learn! This program is fast paced and there is so much to learn so you have to be willing to absorb all the information and act on it.

Store Management Intern

June - July 2018 • Watchung, NJ

What I liked

The internship revealed a realistic view of how to operate a Kohl's department store in a management stand point. It was extremely satisfying to learn how to lead and work with a diverse group of Associates. Then, seeing the amount of impact that your group's efforts affected the business is encouraging (or discouraging - depending on how well the business did). My experience went extremely well because my area of responsibility outperformed both the District and Region's metrics.

What I wish was different

Just as I felt that I was getting the hang of things, two months has passed by. I wish the internship was longer because there was a lot to learn, and I wanted to have more time to immerse myself in it. It ended too soon.

Advice

Be interested and ready to get immersed in the internship. You will actually learn how a department store is ran. It's not about getting coffee for people or performing banal tasks. I enjoyed the experience and did not feel that it was boring. It's a real hands-on experience. You will get your hands dirty and get into the thick of everything.

Store Manager Intern

June - August 2019 • Alameda, CA

What I liked

Being in a new place and the bay area market allowed me to experience business on a whole other level. I learned a lot in the weeks of my internship not only about myself, but about managing teams, building connections, operations and supply chain management, marketing, and merchandising. I watched the lessons i was taught in class come to life, and it made me really value my education here at Chico State more.

What I wish was different

My store manager quit during my experience, so a lots of things were up in the air, and I lost the person I was supposed to work closest with. Some days I felt that i had to find things to do, or guide my own experience because no one else was.

Advice

Go to the career fair! Even if it is just practice for post graduate life. My hiring process for the internship was so smooth and was a direct result of offerings provided by the career center. Also, take yourself out of your comfort zone and try working in a new place or new field, you'll learn so much more that way.

customer service

May - September 2018 • Sun Valley, CA

What I liked

I liked the amount of employees that were my age because that allowed me to feel far more comfortable and welcomed to work at a retail store. I also liked interacting with customers and helping them find anything that they were searching for.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish that was different were the hours. I actually wanted to work longer than the hours I was offered but it did allow me to have a flexible schedule for school.

Advice

One piece of advice I would want others to know is, don't be afraid to approach a customer in need. Customers tend to shy away from asking for help but if you acknowledge that they need help they will definitely let you know.

Store Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Irvine, CA

What I liked

The team was supportive and was willing to teach. You are able to get hands-on experience on everything that goes into operating a large-scale department store, including but not limited to operations, payroll, merchandising, sales, and human resources.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer so that you are able to familiarize yourself more with the store.

Advice

Be proactive and ask questions. It can get fast-paced, so unless you actively ask to shadow others, you may be lost and confused on what to do.

Sales Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Sarasota, FL

What I liked

I consistently learned so much each day throughout the entire 8 week period. They were able to locate me at a store within my hometown. The intern program included multiple field trip events and was well organized.

What I wish was different

The hours were inconsistent. I wish the internship was longer than 8 weeks. There was a lot of pressure on interns to accept manager-in-training positions post-internship.

Advice

Stay open-minded. Actively make efforts to connect with associates and managers. Take initiative in your learning. Don't be afraid to make mistakes.

Store Management I

June - July 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

The amount of autonomy we received as interns was fantastic. I was able to truly come into my own and find my leadership style independently while also being guided by upper management. It was definitely a nice balance.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to have been eased in a little bit more but the "sink or swim" standard did force me to adapt and figure things out for myself.

Advice

I would advise to not let small things get to you. You will probably fail at least once, but don't fret. You are SUPPOSED to fail sometimes, that's when you grow the most. You learn from your mistakes and take it in stride and you become better. Fail fast and fail forward. Let your mistakes guide you but not define you.

Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Augusta, ME

What I liked

I loved getting my first hands-on management experience, it was a truly amazing opportunity that I wouldn't have had the chance to experience if it weren't for the job posting I saw on Handshake, and thanks to a member of the Radford Career Center that personally informed me about the position! The experience of the internship was priceless, and better yet, led to me being offered a full-time salaried position after graduation.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I loved all of it!

Advice

Search Handshake regularly for jobs, you would be surprised how often new jobs & internships appear! Also, don't hesitate to stop by the Career Center and check out some of their resources, I was able to get a suit from the career closet for my interview, and chatted with a staff member there who showed me how to use Handshake, and helped me find this internship. As for the internship itself: go into internships with the notion that it's not just a job, it's also an opportunity to learn and grow yourself.

Kohl's Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Redlands, CA

What I liked

Being apart of Kohl's Management allowed me to fully understand what it is like to be apart of a team. There is more going on than simply what is on the sales floor. I was able to learn the aspects of business, why products aren't selling, how we can improve products to sell, and how to make a customers experience more rewarding. I was able to have a great internship experience because of the team at the Redlands Kohl's.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship would have been longer. Two months of learning the operations of the store, understanding Kohl's policies, and getting to know your team was not enough time. I feel like I was just getting a hang of it when I had to leave.

Advice

Always ask questions. When you do not understand a concept, just ask! Everyone is there to help you be successful. Also, the two months flew by. Enjoy every second and don't be afraid to take risks. You learn by making mistakes, and that is how you improve.
