What I liked

This internship offered a great balance between structure and freedom to be self-directed. Teams of interns were given challenges to solve in the healthcare industry, and each team was able to decide how to organize itself and how to address the challenge.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more built-in opportunities to interact with full-time employees and their teams.

Advice

Take some time away from your own project to see what other teams are doing. You'll learn a lot from how others tackle problems. Often some of the best ideas that can impact your project will come from someone outside your team.

The office feels smaller as it is not a HQ

Don't ever be afraid to ask for help; everyone is around because they want to help you learn. The entire experience is amazing.

Technology Development Program Intern

What I liked

I had the chance to learn new technologies & Agile practices. I had direct contact with some of the users for my project, and my code will actually be used. All of the people I met at Optum were helpful & willing to give advice. I lived far away from the office, but Optum provided housing for interns that didn't live within a certain distance.

What I wish was different

Nothing! This was a wonderful internship.

Advice

Meet with as many full-timers as you can. As an intern with TDP, you work with other interns on a project. You do have a manager, business coach, and tech coach, but it was really helpful to meet people from other teams in order to get a better feel for the company. Most people were totally willing to meet for coffee!

What I liked

The company had great culture and the project that was given to me was perfect for me.

What I wish was different

It would've been even more efficient if the interns could receive information beforehand as to what they would be working on as well as what software language/ API's would be used throughout the course of the internship.

Advice

Be available and receptive to put in work outside the office if you want to succeed in any workplace. In order to contribute to the project, you need to have a good idea as to what you are working on and at the same time do not expect everything that you encounter to be something you are familiar with already. Most of all enjoy the process and network well among your co-workers and managers and build a solid foundation.

Full-Stack Software Engineer

What I liked

Great work environment and very helpful employees that will spend time with you if you have any questions or need any assistance. The program was run very effectively by Brendan Cariddi, presentations of work every following week, and there were workshops held for interns there. Daily meetings that ran Agile that were very helpful for keeping on track. Meetings with the business side that we were working for to help redefine our project to their preference.

What I wish was different

I wish I could've got my code reviewed for the two projects I worked on. It was a great learning experience for me when it came to developing my coding skills, but I was curious if I could've improved my coding skills/style.

Advice

Get ready to learn a lot, and communicate with a community of employees and interns.

Client Management Intern

What I liked

First off, the structure of the client management internship was phenomenal. It was the perfect mix of on-the-job experience paired with introductory training to a corporate job. They provide you the training and educational resources to understand PBM's and healthcare management. They provided the interns with mentors, executive mentors, and a weekly speaker series with upper management. The interns were provided a cohort project which we worked on for the duration of our internship and got to present our findings at headquarters in Minnesota which was an eye-opening experience.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been given more work, there were times when things were pretty slow. But, my manager was accommodating and worked with me to delegate additional responsibilities when there wasn't much to do.

Advice

One of the greatest benefits of working for a Fortune 5 company is the plethora of resources and opportunities that are available to you. Take full advantage through networking with as many people as you can to learn more about different career paths and job roles. During my time, I was given the opportunity to pursue my own project on the side which exposed me to the process of workstreams in a corporate setting as well as getting to work with a variety of departments.

It was a very organized and educational workplace. I feel like I learned a lot more at a good pace over the course of three months than I have in the last two years of structured schooling.

Advice

Don't be too worried about lacking in information from your studies. As long as you have a pretty basic foundation in CS you can and will most definitely excel in Optum's Tech Development Program.

More in the office interaction, my internship was mostly remote.

Advice

Use this opportunity to network with as many people as possible! Optum/UnitedHealth Group is such a big company that there are so many different types of work that you can be exposed to.
