Software Engineer Intern

Winter and Summer 2026 Software Engineer Intern

Location: San Francisco, CA (In-Office)

Are you proficient in computer science and AI-accelerated software engineering? Do you want to hone and practice your skills while working alongside a team of elite coders and enthusiastic product thinkers? Curious about how a high-performance startup works and what it takes to build a high-growth unicorn?

If so, come join us at Human Interest and put your skills to work on one of the most important problems America faces, the retirement crisis - that is, the growing concern that a significant portion of the population may not have the resources to support their life in retirement. An overwhelming majority of Americans—79% according to the National Institute on Retirement Security—believe the nation is facing a retirement crisis. When you consider this sentiment and that around half of working-age households do not have *any* retirement account assets, the scale and criticality of this problem is apparent.

Human Interest is relentlessly focused on solving this silent crisis by bringing retirement benefits to every employer, and to every working-age person. Our technology-first approach to rethinking the world of retirement was a bold experiment when the company was established in 2015. Since then, tens of thousands of businesses have chosen Human Interest, and we have risen to become the highest-scoring 401(k) provider in America. We’re backed by a number of top-tier investors, including Blackrock, Morgan Stanley, SoftBank, and others. Come join us, and see what the magic is!

What You Get to Do Every Day (Responsibilities)

  • You’ll get to practice your skills in coding in the context of a large-scale fintech product with a cloud-based service-oriented architecture.
  • You will get to apply your theoretical knowledge in analyzing software complexity, system design, data modeling, and other topics in a real-life production environment.
  • You’ll collaborate with highly-skilled software engineers, product experts.
  • You’ll gain exposure to the culture and software development lifecycle of a fast-moving tech company built on a highly-modern stack.

What You Bring to the Role (Minimum Requirements)

  • Proficient in building web applications (frontend and backend) on top of common cloud platforms (e.g. AWS).
  • Proficient in applying theoretical computer science knowledge (such as data structures and algorithms) in real-life software engineering situations.
  • Proficient in common practical software engineering skills such as the use of version control, unit testing, and modern editors/IDEs.
  • Completed coursework in applied machine learning (ML) or artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Proficient in the use of AI-powered agentic and non-agentic coding assistants to perform software engineering tasks such as analyzing, writing, testing, or debugging software.
  • Possess top-tier communication skills, a bias for action, and an optimistic attitude.
  • This position does not offer sponsorship for work authorization, for either the internship or potential full-time offer.

About the Role

As a Software Engineer Intern at Human Interest, you will be an integral part of our engineering team, contributing to projects that are central to our mission.
