Systems Engineering Intern
Arthrex, Inc. is a global medical device company and a leader in new product development and medical education in orthopedics. The Systems Engineering team in Santa Barbara, CA (ACT) is responsible for full lifecycle product development of Arthrex’s industry‑leading camera systems. We are searching for a highly capable opto-mechanical‑focused Systems Engineering Intern to help evaluate and test next‑generation arthroscopes. The successful candidate will be able to design and implement test fixtures lending themselves towards both optical and mechanical testing of chip-on-tip videoscopes. The fixtures and associated testing will require working knowledge of mechanical systems, electrical systems, optical systems, optical bench test equipment, matlab and/or python, and CAD modeling. The intern will work as a member of the systems team but will support members of the mechanical and optical teams for both test completion and mentorship.
This internship will run from June 2026 – September 2026. The ideal candidate will have the availability to work 30-40 hours per week at our Santa Barbara, CA facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Chip-on-Tip Videoscopes Optical Testing.
- Chip-on-Tip Videoscopes Mechanical Testing.
- Arthroscope Test Fixture Design and Development.
- Proof-of-concept prototyping for chip-on-tip videoscopes.
Education and Experience:
- Progress towards a college degree in a Engineering field required, preferably in mechanical engineering, optical engineering, electrical engineering, or related fields. (Recent graduates must be within six months of their graduation date to qualify.)
Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses and/or Training:
- Strong mechanical, electrical, and/or optical development background.
- Experience with:
- Optical bench top test equipment.
- Matlab and/or Python programming.
- Test fixture design and implementation.
- CAD modeling and quick turn prototyping.
- Familiarity with minimally invasive surgery and endoscopic systems a plus.
Machine, Tools, and/or Equipment Skills:
PC; Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook; PowerPoint; Word and Excel. Fax; Scanner.
