Health Program Intern

Internship Opportunity: Health Intern

Futures Without Violence (FUTURES) is a dynamic national organization committed to ending violence against women and children around the world. We seek a dedicated, energetic, and creative individual to join our San Francisco team through a 6-12 month internship.

INTERNSHIP SUMMARY:

Health Program seeks a Intern to work on material development and outreach for our National Health Resource Center on Domestic Violence.

The Intern will work closely with FUTURES’ Health staff to develop materials and refine and support outreach strategies specific to our Center materials and the National Conference on Health and Domestic Violence, and draft content for websites and online communication.

Compensation will be in the form of course credit, or a stipend of $15/hour for up to 24 hours a week. Interns are encouraged to pursue work-study matches from their institutions if applicable, which may allow for extended hours, if desired. Hours of the internship are somewhat flexible; office hours are 9am-5pm PST, Monday through Friday, with a preference for being in the office on Tuesday (to participate in “all staff” meetings) and/or Wednesday.

INTERNSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES & LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Learning Objectives:

As a result of this internship, intern will be better able to:

  • Articulate complex issues related to the health impact of domestic and sexual violence;
  • Gain work experience as part of a diverse team of staff and program partners;
  • Draft content targeted to specific audiences (i.e., health providers, domestic violence advocates etc.);

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Develop and refine FUTURES’ Health Fact Sheets related to the Health Impact of IPV/SV, Reproductive Coercion, HIV & IPV, and more.
  • Create content for FUTURES’ Blog related to the intersections of survivor health, health policy, and violence prevention.
  • Work with FUTURES’ Health staff to implement outreach strategies to specific populations and communities. Including but not limited to: partnering to enhance sector specific databases (e.g. LGBTQ community health providers across the U.S.), drafting emails, researching and forging partnerships.
  • Interest specific activities: graduate student organizing tool update, resources for graduate level health students.
  • Provide some administrative support, including coordinating meetings, trainings, conference calls, etc; preparing meeting agendas, materials, and taking minutes; performing general administrative duties such as photocopying and compiling program materials; and helping organize work that supports executive and program decision making.

Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Graduate student level preferred: public health, nursing, law, social work, public policy and others.
  • Multi-lingual a plus.
  • Previous experience with outreach, marketing, or community organizing.
  • Strong organizational skills, and the ability to think creatively and strategically about engaging diverse audiences in a social issue, including the ability to coordinate meetings with multiple stakeholders from across the country.
  • Demonstrated interest in the intersecting fields of violence prevention and health, or a desire to learn more about the field of violence prevention.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a diverse team.
  • Have prior experience conducting research, and the ability to think strategically about potential partnerships.
  • Exhibit strong creativity and flexibility, and the ability to work on multiple projects.
  • Have an excellent command of contemporary computer skills, office hardware, PC software (Windows environment); basic knowledge of WordPress and online collaboration platforms is a plus.

Who We Are

The National Health Resource Center on Domestic Violence, a project of Futures Without Violence, works to improve health care’s response to domestic violence including:

·       Addressing health policy issues through model legislation, white papers, and advocating with medical associations, state and federal departments of health, medical institutions, health professional schools, managed care organizations and national health care opinion leaders;

·       Producing materials and web resources on a range of issues related to health care and domestic violence;

·       Working with health institutions and systems to engage meaningful and effective public health education efforts around domestic violence;

·       Providing technical assistance for individuals who want to improve health care’s response to domestic violence;

·       Conducting training for health care providers and advocates across the country, and developing model curricula and educational conferences.
