Intern (Media Affairs)

AC Transit's Media Affairs department has an immediate opening for a motivated intern who is ready to challenge the traditional rules of journalism. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for a student with significant coursework in media studies, communication studies, marketing, advertising or a closely related discipline. The candidate chosen for this internship will not only get paid work experience but also have exposure to on-the-job experience under the supervision of professionals who are working on cutting-edge brand journalism solutions. In a nutshell, brand journalism redefines newsgathering, storytelling, and how it's communicated on behalf of a brand.
Under supervision, the intern will be provided the opportunity to actively contribute to engaging content which includes: generating articles, advertising, working live events, creating and editing videos, and monitoring social media. This internship is only open to students who are currently enrolled in a Bay Area undergraduate or graduate school and can dedicate 16-20 hours during the business week at the District's downtown Oakland office. AC Transit has the resources and a bevy of untold stories, all that remains is you.

 Representative Functions:
  • Monitors media for AC Transit news and organizes clips
  • Contributes and updates the existing media used for publicizing specific stories and events
  • Drafts news releases, advisories, run-of-shows and briefing materials
  • Gathers and compiles information to prepare reports and other material as necessary
  • Prepares internal news stories (using print and video) highlighting topical news events of the District and accomplishments of staff members
  • Assists in promoting District campaigns and initiatives – utilizing multi-platform content distribution and displaying strong social media skills
  • Develops strategies for live television and radio events  
  • Assists in organizing and staffing press events
  • Attends and participates in department meetings
  • Performs other media related administrative duties as needed

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills
  • Regular contribution and layout capabilities for two newsletters
  • Experience shooting video and still photos to illustrate stories
  • Competence with non-linear digital editing – Final Cut Pro or similar editing system
  • Proficiency with DSLR cameras, use of professional tripods, wireless microphones, and a camera mounted recorder
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Dreamweaver
  • Must have a valid driver's license and insured vehicle to accomplish assignments
  • Must possess a great work ethic and "can-do" spirit

 Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Current full-time college junior, college senior or graduate student with significant coursework in media affairs, communications, marketing, or a closely related discipline. Must be attending a local Bay Area college or university. Proof of current enrollment is required.

Experience: Must have strong oral and written communication skills. Computer literacy required; basic to intermediate skills with MS Word and Excel. Previous professional work experience is not required.

 Additional Information:
Physical Requirements: Must maintain the physical condition necessary to perform tasks in an office setting operating a personal computer, keyboards, and other peripheral equipment. Must be able to lift boxes weighing up to 25 lbs.

Undergraduates are paid $16 - $17 per hour and Graduate students are paid $18 per hour.
