Emerging Journalist Fellow

The six-month fellowship is a full-time position designed to jumpstart the career of a new professional at a time when journalism is both increasingly vital and threatened. Along with the rest of the news staff, our fellows will help our readers exercise their responsibilities as citizens in an informed manner. And we hope that they will also help create journalism that is more representative of the communities we serve with Crosscut and our sister organization, KCTS 9 public television.
The focus of the next emerging journalist fellow program from Cascade Public Media will be toward Science & Environment news reporting and be placed with our Environment desk and team.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 
  1. Participate in a one-week onboarding that acquaints the Fellow with the various parts of Cascade Public Media (CPM).
  2. Be challenged to produce work on a range of scales; from deeply reported enterprise stories to short explainers to multimedia experiences and interactives.
  3. Reporting Fellows will be expected to produce at least two deeply reported 800- to 1,600-word stories a month, in collaboration and support from newsroom editors and staff journalists. These anticipated deliverables will give Fellows practice working on deadline, and a consistent feeling of accomplishment.
  4. Participate in occasional training sessions by staffers or visiting professionals.
  5. Fellowships will last six months with a start date between January 1-15.
  6. On some occasions, may be asked to serve as a representative of CPM’s journalistic pursuits and participate in community events or industry gatherings.
  7. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  1. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required. Degree in Journalism or related field preferred
  2. Some knowledge in the field of science/environment reporting, and/or keen enthusiasm to report on timely issues in the space in order to inform communities
  3. Demonstrated success in working collaboratively with peers; some experience organizing and managing multiple priorities, and in developing and managing projects
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  5. Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment
  6. Some understanding of journalism ethics and practices
  7. Ability to understand, relate to and communicate the perspectives of diverse communities, historically disadvantaged populations or economically marginalized communities or individuals. Experience living or working with diverse communities is highly desired. Fluency in a language other than English is a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time
  2. Ability to type on a keyboard for long periods of time
  3. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
