Health Access Project (HAP) YHEMOP Health Equity Fellow (Summer 2019) - 2/22 DEADLINE

Advancing Justice-LA Project Description:
The Youth Health Equity Model of Practice (YHEMOP) Health Equity Fellow will work with the Health Access Project (HAP) at Asian Americans Advancing Justice - LA, working to address the health-related needs and access to health coverage of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, & Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities and immigrants. HAP's areas of focus include health coverage, oral health, behavioral health. language access, and health advocacy and policy.
Through the YHEMOP program, the Health Equity Fellow will collaborate with HAP staff and partners to develop a community based study to learn more about access and utilization of oral health prevention and treatment services one year after the restoration of adult dental benefits in California’s Medicaid program. In 2016, HAP conducted a community needs survey and focus groups among AANHPIs to learn about barriers to oral health education and care. Study findings helped to develop priorities which included advocacy for the restoration of dental benefits for low-income adults, as well as culturally and linguistically appropriate services. The proposed 2019 study will help to guide local and statewide oral health priorities and inform the efforts of HAP, HJN partners, as well as the new California Oral Health Network, to further progress towards equitable oral health access for all Californians.
As part of the YHEMOP, the Office of Minority Health (OMH) supports the placement of Health Equity Fellows (students enrolled in higher education studies) to assist in meeting the needs of diverse organizations by completing short-term health equity projects.
