Summer Fellow, Federal Government Relations

The American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) is hiring an undergraduate or graduate fellow for Summer 2019. Representing nearly 60 percent of the U.S. property casualty insurance market, APCIA promotes and protects the viability of private competition for the benefit of consumers and insurers. We represent the broadest cross-section of home, auto, and business insurers of any national trade association and our member companies represent all sizes, structures, and regions, which protect families, communities, and businesses in the U.S. and across the globe.

APCIA's purpose is to advocate our members’ public policy positions in all 50 states and on Capitol Hill, and to keep our members current on the information that is critical to their businesses.

Responsibilities for the Summer fellowship will include:

• providing support for the Federal Government Relations (FGR) team
• working in coordination with the FGR team to track and review relevant legislation
• reviewing and summarizing congressional hearings, legislator bios, and responses
• shadowing lobbyists to meetings on the Hill
• preparing and printing agendas for weekly staff and monthly all-consultants meetings
• providing administrative support and front desk coverage

Fellows will also have the opportunity to work with APCIA staff in other divisions including Policy Development and Research, Public Affairs, Political Engagement, and Federal PAC and Grassroots teams on specialized projects.

Our Washington office is located at the Hall of States (444 N Capitol St. NW, Washington, DC 20001) near the Capitol building and Union Station. Fellowships are paid ($13.25 per hour); transit subsidy will not be provided. Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:

• Interest in learning about the federal public policy-making process.
• Shown experience on research, writing, and oral communication skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple deadlines and projects while working independently.
• The composure and professional demeanor to interact with all levels of the public policy community.
