Communications Assistant

An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the Japanese American National Museum (www.janm.org) is recognized as one of the nation’s premier cultural museums. In 2010 the Japanese American National Museum received America’s highest honor for museums, the federal IMLS National Medal. The National Museum is located adjacent to the Metro Gold Line in the Little Tokyo/Arts district in downtown Los Angeles, a neighborhood that has experienced an exciting revitalization with diverse new restaurants, shops, luxury apartments, and nightlife.
Home of the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy and based in the historic Little Tokyo neighborhood, it has a nation-wide focus and international base of support.
 
Communications Assistant provides support to the Director of Marketing and Communications and other Marketing Unit staff in the promotion of Japanese American National Museum exhibitions, public programs, major events, and other initiatives. General tasks include media research, writing press releases, responding to media inquiries, communication with other cultural institutions for cross-promotional opportunities, selecting and organizing photographs for a variety of uses, and assisting with social media and other digital platforms. Requires occasional evening and weekend hours to support Exhibition openings, Free Family Festival Days and Development events.
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications or English preferred. Minimum of 2 years of public relations/communications work experience, preferably including prior employment with a non-profit, museum, or marketing organization. Willingness to learn and apply new skills. Ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines. Excellent Communication skills and strong proofreading skills. Knowledge of Japanese American history and culture a plus, sensitivity to issues of diversity and ethnicity is essential.
