Network Engineer

Network Engineer II

As a Network Engineer on the Operations Infrastructure team, you will have the chance to help design, build, and manage Carbonite’s global network. You will be a member of a tight-knit, high-functioning team responsible for all aspects of a network that supports business-critical operations worldwide. We are looking for a passionate person that wants to build great things, is both innovative and methodical, is team-focused, and understands that we are in the business of providing a great customer experience. In this role we expect you to have intermediate level knowledge of and hands-on experience with complex networking systems. We are less concerned with the specific vendors you’ve worked with than the environments you have worked in and the impact you made. We want strong communicators with a demonstrated work ethic and who truly value being able to contribute to a team.
Within the first few months, you will be expected to:
  • Build relationships with colleagues across the entire organization.
  • Review existing network architecture and help identify areas for improvement.
  • Help troubleshoot network issues and thoroughly document resolutions.
  • Work closely with a wide variety of people to help educate and communicate how the network works, how it’s going to work and why it works [or doesn’t].
  • Assist in reviewing and implementing network security measures to achieve a highly secure environment.
  • Work with third-party vendors in support of the network.
  • Rack/stack/configure network hardware where needed.
  • Lead after-hours maintenance and troubleshooting activities as part of an on-call rotation.
Primary responsibilities of the role will consist of the following:
  • Comparing the defined standards for network configurations against active deployments and identifying changes that are required, then implementing the changes through GitHub/Ansible
  • Implementing firewall changes to support business requests
  • Driving the retirement of legacy networks to reduce WAN complexities
  • Supporting the lab environments and the teams that utilize them
Key Challenges to Overcome:
The person who excels in this role must translate the overarching operational objectives of security, scalability, and stability into clearly defined tasks that are easily understood by colleagues. These tasks will often include stakeholders across the company and will need to be implemented with appropriate testing, validation, and documentation.
It is always a challenge to effectively prioritize when there are multiple competing interests—doing so successfully requires selecting tasks that are aligned with the core business values and objectives, as well as being able to provide the rationale for your decision.
What will make you successful at YOP IT Solutions, Inc:
  • A track record of good judgment and decision-making in positions with significant responsibility
  • Highly autonomous and able to independently identify high value projects and drive them to completion
  • Demonstrated leadership capability in cross-functional team environments
  • High degree of comfort with complex technical environments
  • Having and being able to articulate/defend an informed opinion on important topics
Skills, Experience and Characteristics:
You will be a tremendous success at YOP if you consistently demonstrate the following characteristics and attitudes:
  • You enjoy communicating with people in the interest of letting them know what’s going on. You appreciate transparency and are upfront about things that go right and go wrong.
  • You think on your feet, have a strong sense of urgency, and can quickly prioritize across a range of options.
  • You think about the big picture – the ability to understand how the whole system works is critical!
  • You are open-minded and like to share ideas in the interest of knowledge exchange.
  • You’re willing to take on new responsibilities while delivering on the ones you’ve already committed to.
  • You measure and define success in terms that are “bigger” than yourself.
  • You’re comfortable doing whatever it takes, from talking to the CEO to breaking down cardboard boxes.
  • You are comfortable traveling to remote offices for network maintenance, refreshes, and assessments. This will require 3-4 weeks of travel a year.
