Summer 2019 International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) Internship - (Stipend)
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is seeking an International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) Intern for a summer internship position.
General Description of Program:
Working directly with a curator, collection specialist, registrar, and conservator, the IFPDA Summer Intern will help with the preparation, classification, and cataloging of a large collection of rare books and artists' books. They will also assist in conducting an inventory of this portion of the museum's collection.
The intern will participate in the day-to-day operations of a curatorial department and assist in a range of activities, from clerical assistance and collection research to gallery installation. The intern will be exposed to the materials and techniques represented in a works-on-paper collection and gain familiarity with museum registration and curatorial procedures, learning about the care and cataloguing of works on paper. They will also develop a working knowledge of a museum database.
Schedule:
The internship will last from mid-July to mid-August 16, 2019
This internship is a total of 24 hours per week for 6 weeks (preferably Tues-Fri, 6 hours a day)
Duties:
- Learn basic works on paper cataloguing procedures
- Learn art museum inventory process
- Identify photography needs for the collection
- Learn to characterize general object condition
- Learn installation techniques for the display of artists' books
Educational Opportunities:
- Receive training in the handling and care of rare and artists' books
- Observe installation of an artists' book exhibition
- Develop a working knowledge of a museum database
- Gain familiarity with museum registration and curatorial procedures, learning about the cataloguing of works on paper
- Learn to identify basic print techniques
Qualifications:
Required: BA graduate with major in art history (experience with fine art prints or artists' books preferred) with strong attention to detail
Preferred: Skill in Microsoft suite; some familiarity with a European language (French, German, Italian, or Spanish); experience handling fine art and art materials; some library science or editorial experience

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are the city's largest public arts institutions and comprise the de Young and the Legion of Honor museums.
