Research Analyst (SelectUSA)

Ascendant is currently recruiting qualified candidates for a Research Analyst position linked to a contract we hold with SelectUSA, a program housed within the International Trade Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce. Ascendant supports SelectUSA’s mission to facilitate job-creating business investment into the United States and raise awareness of the critical role that foreign direct investment (FDI) plays in the U.S. economy.

As part of Ascendant’s Research Team, the Analyst will perform substantive research and analysis and develop policy related research reports in support of SelectUSA’s mission. The Analyst will conduct research on sector specific trends, develop new research methodologies, structure and analyze complex data sets, and create compelling data visualizations. The Analyst will also deliver training to SelectUSA staff and partner organizations on data tools. 

This position is based in Washington, DC and is metro accessible.

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of professional experience in a similar capacity
  • A Master’s degree in Economics is required. 
  • Knowledge or experience in U.S. economic development, international trade, and/or foreign direct investment is desired
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to operate independently and conduct “cradle to grave” quantitative analysis and research projects with minimal supervision
  • Ability to compile and analyze complex datasets and provide recommendations based upon statistical analysis
  • Ability to operate independently to complete tasks and succeed in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to independently deliver training on complex data concepts and methodologies to both internal and external audiences
  • Proficiency with all Microsoft Office Tools including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook. Advanced proficiency with MS Excel is desired, including the ability to generate pivot tables, code basic equations in SQL and/or develop macros, and create complex graphs
  • Proficiency with data visualization software, such as Tableau, a plus
  • Demonstrated experience conducting econometrically sound regression analysis, SAS/STATA proficiency is preferred
  • Proficiency in conducting internet research, as well as utilizing databases; prior experience with LexisNexis, Hoovers, Salesforce and/or FDI Markets is a plus 
  • Must have a strong attention to detail and have the ability to produce professional-grade documents for public dissemination
  • Must have strong writing skills to draft and edit reports, briefing materials, and slide decks
  • High degree of organization and time-management skills
  • Applicants should demonstrate enthusiasm, initiative, flexibility, and the ability to work independently and multitask
  • A public trust background check with U.S. Government must be completed prior to starting work
