Editorial fellow, visual features
Insider Inc. is hiring a paid editorial fellow to tell photo-driven stories on a variety of topics like food, travel, retail, lifestyle, science and health, real estate, and everything in between.
The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. They produce real work that is distributed to our audience of millions, and by the end of six months are prepared for the next phase of their journalism careers. For more information on the Insider Fellowship Program, see here.
Fellows on our visual features team will combine their reporting with photography to tell stories in the reader-friendly, photo-heavy format that Business Insider and INSIDER are known for. They will spend their time doing meaningful work: researching, pitching, shooting and/or photo-sourcing, writing, and producing visual features.
In this position, you can expect to tell stories like these:
- A photographer visited the abandoned towns around Chernobyl more than 20 times over the past 25 years, and the captivating photos show just how suddenly time stopped in its tracks after the disaster
- We did a blind taste test of cheap wines from Costco, Target, and Trader Joe's, and the winner cost less than $5
- Bill Gates is worth $100 billion and he plans to give most of it away — here's how he spends his money now, from a luxury car collection to incredible real estate
- We tried all 6 of Chipotle's bowls designed just for dieters, and while the options were tasty, we found one major flaw
- Beautiful photos show what life is like in the world's most isolated settlement, which sits at the foot of an active volcano in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean
We’re looking for someone with:
- A passion for visual storytelling
- Excellent writing, communication, and time management skills
- Experience reporting, writing, and shooting (school publications are great)
- Skill with a smartphone camera as well as a DSLR — comfort in front of the camera is a plus
- Comfort with photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop
- An ability to identify the heart of a story quickly and weave a narrative through photos and text
- Ability to work quickly, efficiently, and collaboratively
- Familiarity with digital and social media
- Proofreading and copyediting skills a plus
- Familiarity with SEO practices a plus
This is an hourly paid fellowship based out of our New York office. Fellows are encouraged to work 40 hours a week, and fellowships run for six months. Start date for this position will be in June.
