2019-2020 PMC Design Consultant Application

The Publications and Media Center (PMC) is a department of UC Berkeley's LEAD Center. We are located at MLK 177. Our mission is to develop and connect Cal's registered student organizations in the publications, film, and media community. The PMC fulfills its mission by operating programs and offering key resources to support students' needs as content creators, editors, designers, and more. We are currently looking to hire 1 Publications and Media Center Design Consultant, who is able to commit 10-15 hours/week for the 2019-2020 school year. Rate is $16/hour (subject to University minimum wage).

Job Overview
Publications and Media Center Design Consultants (DC’s) are part of a team of 8-10 fellow Publications and Media Center Assistants all under the supervision of the Publications and Media Center's Supervisor and Publications and Media Center's Project Manager. During regularly scheduled shifts, DC’s will hold open office hours for students seeking assistance with design services, including but not limited to publications design, flyer design and poster design. DCs are expected to prioritize layout and publications design for publications, to avoid duplicating general marketing services offered by Innovative Design. DC’s are also expected to be available for appointments with student organizations for assistance.

In addition to the drop-in or by appointment services, together with the PMC leadership team, the DC identifies 1-2 student media clients with whom to work on long term projects each semester. These projects will include but not be limited to creating original work and providing critique and mentorship of their design staff. Finally, the DC is responsible for marketing this program.

PUBLICATION AND MEDIA CENTER DESIGN CONSULTANT:
Essential Duties
Design Support (80%)
- Support students with design needs including but not limited to formatting, layout, teaching skills, troubleshooting and creative support.
- Supports the PMC team in designing materials such as flyers, newsletters and posters.
- Develops curricula and facilitates trainings for the publications and media community
- Coordinates events relevant to design such as programs and workshops in collaboration with the PMC Events Team.
- Communicates with and assists Student Media groups as assigned
- Create a portfolio of PMC design services support work with before and after images related to your work with student media groups

General PMC Support and Services (10%)
- Responds to email personally, as a staff member, and to the studentmedia@berkely.edu address in a timely fashion
- Maintains the PMC calendar and helps coordinate use of the cage and our office space
- Maintains a welcoming and inviting work space
- Maintain the PMC website

Administrative Duties (5%)
- Performs assigned tasks completely and effectively
- Arrives to scheduled shifts, meetings, and training sessions on time and in professional attire
- Reports any problems to supervisors in a timely manner

Additional (5%)
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
- Current full-time student at the time of employment with good disciplinary and academic standing
- Proactive approach to projects and eagerness to support, enhance and connect the publications and media community at UC Berkeley
- Past experience using Adobe Creative Suite, including Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator
- Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive peer relationships with people from diverse backgrounds, both in writing and in person
- Dependable and attentive to detail
- Friendly and approachable
- Knowledge of filmmaking software and equipment a bonus

Expectations
- Adhere to and enforce all University, ASUC, Publications Center, and OCF policies and procedures
- Be responsible with staff privileges, including use of equipment and access to restricted spaces
- Maintain confidentiality and objectivity in all matters related to center business, clientele, and staff
- Work all assigned shifts or arrange with supervisor to make up at another time; accurate and transparent reporting of time worked.
