Assistant Branch Manager


Van Matre Lumber is seeking an experienced Assistant Branch Manager to join the team in Oakland, California. The successful candidate will be responsible for most day to day management of branch staff and operations and will be tasked with ensuring the production and maintenance quality of the lumber yard. The ideal candidate will have a solid foundation in commercial sales, preferably in the wholesale building materials or construction industry. The candidate must also have excellent leadership, organizational, communication, and decision making skills.

Basic Function: Supervises yard/warehouse workers in the receiving, stocking, pulling, loading and delivery of merchandise. May personally perform duties listed. Helps keep yard maintained well, clean, organized and safe.
Responsibilities: 
  • Unloads/oversees the unloading and storage of incoming merchandise. Ensures that merchandise received matches orders.
  • Schedules and dispatches customer deliveries to job sites. Supervises drivers.
  • Provides customer service for retail, contractor or professional builder customers.
  • Evaluates returned merchandise for proper disposition (Resale, Reduce, Reuse, Salvage.. etc)
  • Prepare weekly fabrication schedules with timelines.
  • Assist and sell products and/or projects to customers as necessary.
  • Advise manager of product deliveries, new customer orders, backorders and shortages.
  • Supervises and trains Yard/Warehouse workers, forklift operators and truck drivers.
  • Maintains clean yard environment including warehouses, fences and open areas.
  • Organizes yard layout according to merchandise needs. May complete requisition for replacement of stock merchandise.
  • Completes required inspections and forms. Ensures maintenance is performed.
  • Oversees cut lumber and notifies supervisor so that inventory may be adjusted.
  • Ensures compliance with operational safety and security policies and procedures.
  • Maintains accurate inventory counts and is up to date on products sold, product usage, product prices, and new products.
  • Assume responsibility in the manager’s absence.
  • Assist manager in analyzing internal and external changes that may affect the departments goals or operations.
  • Fills duties and responsibilities of forklift operator as needed.
  • Answers telephone inquiries pleasantly and promptly.
  • Provides customers with additional information on products related to purchases made.
  • Attends and participates in all company sponsored training programs required.
  • Directly supervises 1-3 workers in a small yard and 4-8 workers in a medium yard.
Education Requirements: High school diploma and Bachelor's Degree.
Experience: One or Two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Good interpersonal, communication and customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of building materials products and lumber required.
  • Previous supervisory experience in a lumberyard is desirable.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to stand and walk.
  • Manual dexterity.
  • Ability to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Strength: lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Environment and physical working conditions:
  • Work near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
  • Work in high precarious places.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
License or Certification:
  • Valid Driver's license of the appropriate type and class to operate the type of truck assigned.
