National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program (NBBTP) Intramural Training Research Award (IRTA) Fellowships

Please read important notes below the description and know this is NOT an internship, it is a two-year, immersive TRAINING fellowship with an annual stipend requiring a minimum of a bachelors degree to apply. It is not a FT job with the government or the government contractor. Some Handshake fields are required and thus force us to select "Internship" even though it is incorrect. Sorry for the confusion.

The NBBTP IRTA Fellowships are jointly administered by the Division of Occupational Health and Safety (DOHS) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health. This is a rare opportunity for individuals seeking work in high containment facilities to receive professional training in biosafety and biocontainment at one of the foremost biomedical research centers in the world. Additional information regarding the Fellowships and Professional Development courses is online at www.nbbtp.org; Application packages are due August 2, 2021 for fellowships beginning January 5, 2022 at the NIH Bethesda campus.

The NBBTP Fellowship is designed specifically for people interested in biosafety careers in high containment including facility engineering and maintenance. This is an intensive two-year, immersive experience where Fellows are introduced to all elements of biosafety. The program includes traditional lectures, reading assignments, mentoring projects, applied biosafety research and travel to off-site conferences and training sessions.
PLEASE READ THIS LIST CAREFULLY. PLEASE USE ONLY THE INFORMATION IN THE CUSTOM DESCRIPTIONS or email info@nbbtp.org for clarification
  1. NBBTP/IRTA Fellows must be US citizens or permanent residents. Worth authorizations and student visas are not applicable.
  2. The NBBTP Fellowship is NOT a permanent or full-time employment position with the US Government or the NBBTP contractor. Words such as "hire", "employee", and "full vs part time" do not apply. These required drop down menus on many Handshake fields are not applicable to this position.
  3. The NBBTP Fellowship is NOT an internship; academic credit is irrelevant as applicants must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree to apply.
  4. Do not apply in Handshake, those materials will not be reviewed; follow NBBTP application directions.
  5. The NBBTP website information is correct as of February 1, 2020.
  6. There IS a stipend even though the post indicates "unpaid." Stipends vary by degree and experience per the IRTA stipend schedule.
