NNSA Graduate Fellowship Program


The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Graduate Fellowship Program (NGFP) prepares highly motivated graduate students for a career in national security. The program is sponsored by NNSA and administered by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

This is a 12-month, salaried position working within NNSA program offices in Washington D.C. or at NNSA Field Offices nationwide. Fellows work alongside the nation’s leading scientists, engineers, and policy experts to help implement NNSA programs domestically and internationally.

During their one-year assignments, fellows gain hands-on experience in national security; participate in career development, professional networking, and specialized training, and collaborate with leading national security technology and policy experts. Fellows may support a range of mission areas including but not limited to stockpile stewardship, nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear security, counterterrorism/counter-proliferation, and other pertinent national security mission areas.

This posting is for a full-time position for the fellowship term of June 2021 to June 2022. To be eligible, applicants must be currently enrolled in or have graduated from a graduate degree program with 18 months prior to the application deadline with a minimum 3.20/4.00 cumulative GPA in graduate studies. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens eligible for a high-level security clearance.

Dual citizens who accept a fellowship may be asked to demonstrate their willingness to renounce any secondary citizenship as part of obtaining the security clearance required for the position.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled and matriculated through a graduate degree program on the application due date or have graduated on or after April 2, 2019 with a minimum 3.20/4.00 cumulative GPA in graduate studies at an accredited college or university. Selected applicants enrolled in Fall semester/quarter with no previous graduate-level grades must supply official transcripts demonstrating eligibility (minimum 3.2 GPA) no later than January 15, 2021.

  • Applicants must also be U.S. citizens eligible for a security clearance.

  • Successful candidate demonstrates the ability to work across technical and policy spaces, practices effective communication skills and has an interest in national security.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Pursuing or having completed a Masters’ degree or PhD in a STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology or Mathematics) or Policy field.

Other Information
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Requirements:

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.
