Position Details
Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIPP in partnership with the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) Program are seeking an intern who will increase capacity to give community assistance to more people in Alaska, especially rural and native villages.
The selected NPS-RTCA Fellow will work with the entire RTCA Alaska staff and key community partners to help communities create and improve opportunities for outdoor recreation. Projects will likely include parks and trails planning, activity and event coordination, digital media and organizational development. Occasional travel to project sites is necessary.
Position Responsibilities will include:
- Support the Alaska Trails Initiative by analyzing conservation, outdoor recreation, and tourism from Seward AK. to Fairbanks AK
- Assist with the implementation of Anchorage Outdoor School by building their organizational capacity
- Coordinate RTCA social media and outreach by creating original content about outdoor recreation and conservation for posting to the Alaska Regional social media accounts and national RTCA account
- Help create strategies to increase park and trail development capacity in rural Alaska
- Support 14 technical assistance projects related to outdoor recreation and conservation happening throughout Alaska
Minimum Requirements:
- Ability to meet deadlines and communicate to supervisor when assistance is needed/desired
- Minimum age is 18, maximum age is 30
- Possession of a current valid driver’s license
- Must be US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree is required
Preferred Qualifications:
- BA or BS related to conservation, outdoor recreation, natural resources, or community planning
- Ability to think critically and creatively
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with a variety of people and develop strong partner networks
- Strong organizational skills
- Experience with or ability to learn one or more of the following software programs is desirable: ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office 365
