Volunteer Education Content Creator (Remote)


  • This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity and as an Associate, you are required to contribute a minimum of 5 hours per week.
  • Associates must be willing to attend virtual meetings in EST Timezone and be responsive to emails within 36 hours.
  • STW™ will provide a "letter of recommendation" to interns, students & professionals who are able to showcase outstanding performance for school/university credit and for professional references.

Save the Water™ (STW™) is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to solving the world water crisis through excellence in water science research and by forming alliances with organizations, scientists, universities, media, businesses, and governments around the world to promote awareness of water contamination issues.

Volunteering with STW™ is different from other volunteer experiences as we work in an almost 100% online environment. Save the Water™ is run like a business and we rely heavily on frequent email communications, meetings held via google hangouts/Zoom, and collaboration on projects via google drive. Volunteers are held to high standards and deliverable due dates.

The Role:
Reporting to the Education Content Manager, the Education Associate: Education Content Creator is responsible for supporting the Education Group by researching and writing industry-related content that increases public awareness about water contamination. He/she will work closely with the WEM Education Content Manager, Curriculum Development team, and other stakeholders to identify opportunities, resolve roadblocks/issues and grow STW™’s Water Education Materials (WEM) Education Programs.
 
What you will be responsible for...
  • Research topics on water education topics using current research and primary sources.
  • Write educational content on water education topics for our website.
  • Catalog references and fact check sources.
  • Update content on the website when needed.
  • Monitor webpages for broken and error links.
  • Assist the Education Content Manager in brainstorming content ideas and developing strategies to execute.
  • Deliver project updates at Education Group meetings.
  • Support the program development progress that aligns to Save the Water’s mission in educating the public about world water issues. 
  • Work collaboratively with the team members in the Water Education Materials (WEM) team.
  • Increasing SEO of our website using keywords as developed by our Web Analysts.
  • Be willing to attend virtual meetings in EST timezone (GMT -4:00) and respond to emails within 24 hours.

About you
  • Have the ability to write content for a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English.
  • Strong attention to detail in all aspects of work.
  • Strong ability to self-motivate, multi-task and prioritize effectively. Proven ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and online environment.
  • Demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills to elicit information and provide accurate information clearly and concisely.
  • Very comfortable working in a virtual team environment incorporating group problem-solving; shares information and responsibility. 
  • Committed to attending team meetings. 
  • Strong relationship-building skills, both internally and externally.
  • Outgoing, persistent and energetic. Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to handle requests and complaints in a professional, non-confrontational manner.

  • Bachelor’s degree (or in progress) in Education, STEM field, or similar, with experience in research methods (APA style) and data analysis. Equivalencies of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Excellent content writing skills (grammar, punctuation, etc.).
  • Background in STEM fields (e.g. Environmental Science, Physical Sciences, Engineering, or other related fields).
  • Minimum one year of applied experience in research and/or evaluation through school or professional work, preferably in an academic environment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and details simultaneously.
  • Effective oral communication skills and ability to work cooperatively with staff.
  • Innovative thinker who is passionate about our cause.
  • Familiar with current school age trends.
  • Experience using Google product applications or GSuite.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, STEM field, or similar. 
  • Knowledge in Water Science, Environmental Science, Biology, or Chemistry.
  • Research methodologies and writing.
  • Previous laboratory experience in academic/industrial research.
  • Graphic design skills preferred.
  • Background in STEM education as instructor or tutor.
