Counselor Assistant/DSPS/Interpreter

WHAT YOU'LL DO
As a Counselor Assistant/DSPS/Interpreter, you will be helping to ensure that students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate in the educational activities of the college by providing qualified students with the required services and accommodations to meet their educational needs.

You will be responsible for interpreting and translating English to sign language for students and assisting staff in the recruitment, orientation, and advisement of students with disabilities. You will also participate in program relations with the community, public, and private agencies which includes providing information on the resources and assistive devices available to students with disabilities.

The current vacancy is a fulltime position (12 mos/year, 40 hrs/week) located in the Disabled Student Program & Services (DSP&S/EAC) Office at Ventura College.

Established in 1925, Ventura College was one of the first community colleges in California and currently has an enrollment of 14,500 students. Located approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles and 30 miles south of Santa Barbara, the 112-acre campus is set in the rolling hills of Ventura – so close to the ocean that there is a clear view of the Channel Islands from several spots on campus.

WHO WE ARE
Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD) is a public community college district serving residents throughout Ventura County. VCCCD's three colleges - Moorpark College, Oxnard College, and Ventura College - offer programs for transfer to four-year colleges and universities; career technical training; basic skills instruction; as well as community service, economic development, and continuing education for cultural growth, life enrichment, and skills improvement.


This recruitment is being conducted to establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill district-wide, current and upcoming, temporary and regular vacancies for the duration of the list, not to exceed one year.
 
Representative Duties
Assist counselor and instructors with the orientation and college registration of students. E
 
Create and maintain student records in legal compliance with Title V. E
 
Assist counselors and the Coordinator with outreach to students with disabilities for the purpose of promoting access to the programs and activities of the college. E
 
Coordinate and implement services and instructional support for students with disabilities; arrange sign language interpreters, note takers and tutors as needed. E
 
Interpret in instructional settings using American Sign Language. E
 
Recruit, hire, train, provide work direction and evaluate interpreters, tutors and note takers; maintain work schedule for support staff and identify substitute interpreters as necessary. E
 
Coordinate recruitment and liaison activities between the department and various public and private agencies. E
 
Assist program faculty, counselors, coordinators and administrators with the development and implementation of special projects. E
 
Provide information to students with disabilities on the resources, assistive aids and services available; instruct students in the proper operation of specialized equipment; arrange for equipment loan. E
 
Maintain records and prepare reports as required, including inventory of equipment; research and acquire college textbooks in alternative formats. E
 
Coordinate accommodated testing and provide input to others on specialized support services, as necessary. E
 
Assist counselors with the development of individual student educational contracts per Title V. E
 
Assist in planning continued services, special programs and activities for students with disabilities.
 
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor's degree in Interpreting, Deaf Studies, Education,
Special Education, Psychology, Liberal Studies, or other related field and three years of full-time
interpreting work experience.

Certificate from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, National Association of the Deaf (Interpreter
Level 3 or above), or equivalent state certification within six months of employment.
