Grade Checker - Grading, Excavating and Demolition

Basic Functions:

The function of a Grade Checker is to monitor equipment operators and laborers on the job site to ensure work is being completed according to plans. S/he assists the foreman in developing strategies to improve efficiency and productivity.

Qualifications:

  • Good time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Able to read stakes.
  • Proper job site attire, including safety boots and vest, gloves, coveralls, etc.
  • Proficient in use of laser levels.
  • Hand tools including shovel, hatchet and/or hammer, folding ruler pick, sledge hammer, 25 foot tape measure, and banjo.Tool belt and hand tools including hand level, stopwatch/timer, and 100 foot tape measure.
  • 2 years of field experience in the industry.
  • Bachelors degree in civil engineering, project management, construction management, or operations management is preferred. Other degree concentrations may be considered. A college degree is not required for this position with the proper substitution of experience. 

Reporting Relationship

  • The Grade Checker reports to the Foreman.
  • The Operator 1, Operator 2, Laborer 1, and Laborer 2 report to the Grade Checker.

Authorities

The following are principal authorities granted to the Grade Checker:

  • Exercise the responsibilities and perform the duties of this position. This includes full decision-making authority for all responsibilities and/or duties.
  • Set authority levels for direct reports (as long as authorities do not exceed your level).

Responsibilities

  • Comply with all applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations.
  • Conduct all activities in compliance with the Elite code of conduct.
  • Create a positive work environment and attitude building supportive morale
  • Document "lessons learned" and share with other employees, as appropriate.
  • Enforce and adhere to ethical business practices.
  • Enforce and adhere to the codes of the company's Mission Statement.
  • Identify any issues to superior (document if possible).
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Grade Checker.
  • Report and correct unsafe working conditions.
  • Assist with interviewing and testing new employees as required.
  • Make recommendations for process improvements.
  • Assist in pipe laying operation.
  • Assist with, or execute, minor equipment repairs, including hoses, filters, fluid changes, cutting edges, etc.
  • Inspect all equipment for breakdowns.
  • Maintain all tools, repairing or replacing tools as required.
  • Read and understand stakes.
  • Report all equipment problems to supervisor.
  • Use all equipment properly and ensure safe work habits.
  • Take advantage of opportunities to promote Elite in order to generate interest in the company.
  • Identify any issues to superior (document if possible).
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Grade Checker.
  • Report and correct unsafe working conditions.
  • Make recommendations for process improvements.
