Chemistry Division Director

Serves as the Chemistry Division Director, second-line supervisor for two public health laboratory section: Newborn Screening and Analytical Chemistry. Responsible for operational and strategic planning, staffing, coordinating, directing, monitoring and controlling activities and initiatives in these two public health laboratory sections; and the incorporation of Federal, State and Agency strategic goals into the Chemistry Division's operational plans and activities. Responsible for ensuring that the Chemistry Division laboratories meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) requirements. Ensures that the Chemistry Division Laboratories meet Level 1 Laboratory Response Network (LRN) Chemistry Laboratory standards and requirements.

Responsible for developing, implementing, validating and performing new test methodologies as determined necessary across the Chemistry Division laboratories relevant fields of testing. Provides consultation and interpretations to agency staff, partners and clients. Represents the laboratory and participates in decision making process by serving on agency committees. Engages in community and educational support activities to support agency goals. Periodically serves as the state public health on-call director during weekends and holidays according to an established schedule.

State Minimum Requirements: A bachelor's degree and relevant program management experience.

Agency Additional Requirements: Must be qualified to perform high complexity testing and serve as a general or technical supervisor under CLIA'88 regulations. Must possess thorough knowledge and understanding of laboratory quality assurance, quality control, laboratory certification standards, and safety principles and practices. Must possess good management and leadership skills, communicate effectively with staff members, partners, clients and the public, have

knowledge, skills and abilities to solve a variety of complex scientific, technical, administrative and leadership problems.

Must be able to work under limited supervision and effectively with laboratory staff and the public.

Independently plan, organize and perform work tasks to complete responsibilities, work projects and assignments in a thorough and effective manner. Coordinates teamwork assignments; assist, trains and directs others. Must have correctable vision (20/40) - must not be colorblind. Must be able to work for long periods of time wearing personal protective equipment. Must not not be hypersensitive or allergies to substances and materials routinely used in the laboratories. Must possess the ability to stand or sit for long periods of time while working at the laboratory bench, chemical fume hood, or biological safety cabinet. Must have a valid SC driver's license. In-state and out-of-state overnight travel is required. Must be able to perform overnight and shift work to include Saturdays, Sundays and holidays in response to chemical terrorism, disease outbreaks or other emergencies of public health importance.
