We are seeking to hire a GIS professional who thrives on applying GIS to address real world challenges facing communities. The hire will be a key member of the CHARM GIS team. CHARM is an in-house, interactive, GIS-based, sim-city style platform for helping elected officials and community stakeholders understand natural hazards and strategies for long-term planning and development. Our program’s success is the result of highly methodical data handling and a knack for translating complex technical data into simple summaries. This approach allows us to quickly develop highly localized decision-support models for communities across Texas and beyond. By joining our team, you will work to bring in new data sets, develop new analytical GIS tools, and formulate ways to effectively communicate mapping data. The hire must be able to balance individual tasks with team-based collaboration. The hire will bring work experience with multi-phase GIS projects, together with a creative mindset about analyses and cartographic solutions for improving communication. Hires must be able to occasionally travel overnight for project work. The position is located in Houston, TX and salary is commensurate with skills and experience. Position is full time, and benefits include paid vacation, paid sick leave, a very generous medical insurance package, and retirement program options.

Successful candidates will have positive professional work references and pass a background check. Interviews will be scheduled on a rolling basis beginning August 03.

Primary Qualifications
  • 5 or more years’ GIS experience is preferred; a minimum of 3 years’ GIS experience is required to be considered.
  • We expect you to be skilled in advanced ESRI ArcGIS tools and methods, to develop and use scripts to streamline workflows, and to have advanced knowledge of geodatabases and relational databases.
  • You’ll be working with GIS data sets of all types, at all scales.
  • Hires must be able to quickly interpret data formats, attributes, and their properties to support the development of new GIS-based tools for decision-support and planning.
  • Knowledge of data source methods, projections, scale, domains, and definitions is required.
  • Be highly organized and attentive to detail in all aspects of GIS work.
  • Subject matter background in either natural hazards, hydrology, urban planning, or natural resource management is highly beneficial and preferred.
  • Strong communication and writing skills are expected.
  • GISP credentials are valued.
  • Ideally, the candidate will have a master’s degree in geography, planning, natural resources, or allied discipline.
