Career Center Peer Advisor

The Career Center is recruiting to fill Peer Advisor positions for the 2017-2018 academic year! The Peer Advisor serves a critical role in the Career Center, as they are most notably the first point of contact for all who enter our department and serve as the department’s “ambassadors.” Customer service is a critical role to this position, in addition to presenting workshops to peers across campus and providing individual assistance/peer counseling to students and alum in the center.

The Career Center prepares undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni to make informed decisions about their futures by providing comprehensive resources, programs, and counseling on career development, internships, employment, and graduate school. The Peer Advisor position is an integral role in the success of our programs and services. Working directly with and supervised by a Career Counselor, Peer Advisors are trained to be extremely knowledgeable about Career Center services, and will assist students through providing daily customer service in the Career Center, one-to-one service, and conducting workshops

QUALIFICATIONS

· Interest in actively supporting the career and professional development of your fellow Cal students

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral), public speaking experience, excellent organizational skills, and some experience/knowledge of campus student groups and organizations

· Proven track record of showing initiative and reliability - must work well both independently and in groups

· Prior advising or related experience is desirable though not required; familiarity with the Berkeley campus and experience in delivering workshop material is preferred

· Highly reliable; timely to shifts, meetings and with deadlines

· Maintain confidentiality, discretion and objectivity in all matters related to work with students/alumni

· Preference is given to students who will be sophomores or juniors, and have been at Cal for at least 1 semester  

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be Work Study eligible and able to commit to approx.10 hours a week through the Academic Year Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Must be available to work in the Career Center, 2-6 hrs/week between the hours of 12pm – 4pm, Monday-Friday AND be available for evening programs/workshops in other campus venues (total ~6 hrs/wk with specialist duties)
  • Must be available for ALL training sessions: Fall 2016 training will take place August 15 - 19 from 9am - 4pm

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Customer Service (40%)

  • Serve as the first point of contact for all visitors who enter the Career Center; providing exceptional personal assistance to current students and alumni by answering questions and directing to appropriate resources;
  • Advise students in a variety of career-related topics such as job search, resume critique, using Handshake and Letter Service questions, to name a few;
  • Staff reception desk as needed; answer phones and schedule student appointments as appropriate;

Programming (40%)

  • Collaborate with fellow Peer Advisors to prepare and deliver career-related content on a variety of topics such as resume writing, job/internship search, grad school application process, and interviewing, to name a few
  • Update presentations using PowerPoint/Prezi or similar programs, to reflect topical information and changes for each program delivered
  • Be available to deliver workshops to student organizations and Career Center partners, typically afternoons and evenings; 

Specialist Role (10%)

  • Assist Career Center mission through leadership in a specialist area;
  • Specialist roles will include Marketing, Handshake Communications, Workshop Coordinator, Blog, Presentations, and Outreach; 

Administrative (10%)

  • Check and respond daily to e-mail;
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly Peer Advisor staff meetings;
  • Attend and actively participate in all training sessions;
  • Serve on the Career Center Student Advisory Board when convened ;
  • Assist and attend Cal Day festivities on behalf of the Career Center;
  • Keep supervisor informed about advising questions and concerns and maintain regular communication
