PR & Policy Communications Fellowship

The Jain Family Institute (JFI) is seeking a fellow to join its editorial team. The PR & Policy Communications fellow will work collaboratively with JFI’s editorial and strategy staff on a wide array of materials related principally to a new guaranteed income initiative.

You are a good fit for this position if you love to write and edit and feel comfortable working on fast-paced projects with a variety of collaborators and stakeholders. An interest in effective, adaptive communications, and deep interest in policy and economic justice, are crucial: the project with which you will be assisting is one of the most ambitious guaranteed income pilots in the country, aimed towards reducing poverty and strengthening the social safety net for populations in need. This initiative within JFI’s larger guaranteed income project is rapidly growing, and a self-starting, curious, and resourceful approach is key.

Time commitment: You will be expected to work approximately 20 hours per week. However, given the ambitious timelines of the projects on which you will assist, you may be asked to work longer hours on occasion. If so, JFI will compensate you at an equivalent hourly rate.

Confidentiality: As needed

Tasks: The fellow will be focused on leveraging JFI and partner research to prepare reports, fact sheets, presentations, and talking points for use by partners in municipal government, advocacy, academia, philanthropy, and journalism. The fellow will also contribute to communications by researching and contacting journalists, updating the project’s website, and creating assets for social media. You will be part of every aspect of internal and external communication about the project, from its public announcement, to agendas and minutes for its advisory council, to tailored fundraising documents, to information sheets that translate its research evaluation for general audiences and advocacy groups. You will work primarily with JFI’s Public Relations lead and COO, as well as JFI’s Editorial Director, guaranteed income team, and external partners.

Required:

-      Ability to write quickly in a variety of styles (i.e., policy summary, website copy, journalist outreach email, etc.)

-      Ability to fulfill deadlines independently and in a timely manner

-      Ability to confidently and accurately conduct research on safety net and municipal policies, economic inequality, and racial injustice

-      Facility editing and fact-checking

-      Experience with Keynote, Powerpoint, Excel, Google Docs, Google Slides — our partners work in a variety of formats and you will be using all of them

Preferred:

-      Experience with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign

-      Experience with fundamentals of graphic design (for infographics, social media assets, etc.)

-      Previous experience working in policy, municipal government, political campaigns, or communications

Benefits:

-      A stipend of $15,000, paid in semi-monthly installments of $1,250 for six months with renewal based on performance

-      Opportunities to meet with leading scholars, policy experts, and national leaders in advocacy on economic justice

Commitment:

-      The position will be remote at least until the end of the year, though there may be opportunities, if so desired, to work from our Manhattan office on occasion. However, you will need to be present and online during your set working hours, and as needed for research meetings and presentations. Our typical hours are 10am – 6pm EST.
