CDC Health Communications Fellowship

Two fellowship opportunities are currently available with the Health Communications Branch of the Office of Smoking and Health (OSH) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Key content areas for the branch include media planning and evaluation for the Tips From Former Smokers National Tobacco Education Campaign and providing evidence-based health communication technical assistance to OSH funding recipients and partners.

The selected participants would primarily engage with our health communication technical assistance staff on research activities to enhance and provide evidence-based support to OSH funding recipients and partners as they implement media efforts toward reaching their public health goals. Specific activities may include helping OSH subject matter experts to identify and interpret tobacco counter marketing guidance and recommendations in response to technical assistance requests from funding recipients; to review, compile, and synthesize media and communications data and information from funding recipients and other sources to create summary reports or visuals to be used to identify trends and inform program planning.

This training experience would complement and continue the participant's academic course of study and enhance their ability to contribute to the future technical workforce by allowing the candidate to apply and deepen their expertise in marketing and public health in the real-world context of national- and state-funded public health media efforts.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
