Data Engineer Co-op (July-December 2021)

Amazon Robotics, a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon.com, empowers a smarter, faster, more consistent customer experience through automation. Amazon Robotics automates fulfilment center operations using various methods of robotic technology including autonomous mobile robots, sophisticated control software, language perception, power management, computer vision, depth sensing, machine learning, object recognition, and semantic understanding of commands. Amazon Robotics has a dedicated focus on research and development to continuously explore new opportunities to extend its product lines into new areas. 

Our Amazon Robotic Data Engineers will work closely with software engineers, Fulfillment Center operation teams, system engineers, and product managers in the development, qualification, and documentation of new as well as enhancements to existing operational metrics. You will work on operational "proof of concept" metrics, dashboards, and reports. Support internal users onboarding of simple and complex queries to our Big Data environment while helping to debug and optimize these queries when needed. Develop documentation describing metrics and there applicability to operational use cases. Data Engineers will provide support and maintenance to existing metric data pipeline (ETL), provide tier 1 support to internal users of our Big Data environment, and provide tier 2 support to external operations personnel reporting metrics and data problems.

A successful candidate must be able to understand the application of operational metrics in managing fulfillment centers, has the business and technical acumen to take metric requirements and translate them into functional requirements, construct SQL queries to create metrics and/or informational dashboards, define test cases, and implement functional tests to validate the veracity of the data. This individual must possess the technical aptitude to pick-up new BI tools and programming languages to interface with different data access layers for metric computation, data mining, and data modeling.

This role is a 6 month co-op to join AR full time (40 hours/week) from July-December 2021.
 Amazon Robotics co-op opportunities will be based in the Greater Boston Area, in our two state-of-the-art facilities in Westborough and North Reading, MA. Both campuses provide a unique opportunity for interns to have direct access to robotics testing labs and manufacturing facilities.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Intelligence, Statistics, Engineering, Math or related technical field
  • Exposure to best practices in data analytics and reporting; data integrity, data analysis, data validation, test design, and documentation
  • Experience in writing ANSI SQL code in the creation of metrics and dashboards. Skills in database technology and SQL programming required
  • Ability to write and implement comprehensive test cases to qualify metric output
  • Experience with data analysis/statistical tools such as Excel, R, Matlab, SAS, or Minitab, and scripting languages
  • Effective at troubleshooting, debugging, and root causing defects in metric calculation and/or reporting
  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and making headway in the face of uncertainty
  • Strong written communication skills and ability to write well structured documentation
  • Ability to work with non-technical users to explain technical functions and/or business requirements.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and manage competing priorities

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Pursuing a Master Degree in Business Intelligence or engineering
  • Experience with web frameworks and technologies
  • Competent in a third generation programming language such as Java, C++, C#, JavaScript
  • Experience working with Business Intelligent platforms
