Intern, Analytics

Inmar’s Advanced Analytics Team is looking for a statistically minded intern to work on strategic development of retail solutions.  The student will be working closely with Inmar’s senior statistician to sample retail data from Hadoop, develop statistical solutions, and communicate results. 

ADVANCED ANALYTICS TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES

You will work in a team that is developing and shaping Inmar’s retail analytical capability, through the development of new insights, processes and techniques. 

  • The team contributes to the execution, documentation and interpretation of analytics, and develops and tests queries in multiple programming languages (SQL, R, Python).
  • The team conducts analysis for one of several Inmar business areas using a variety of data types, sizes and sources including transactional and loyalty card data for retail clients and manufacturer analytics.
  • Types of data analysis our team conducts include data extracts for promotion targeting, product and customer profiling as well as some statistical analyses such as clustering and regression.
  • The team is responsible for ensuring that work produced is of the necessary high quality and requires us to be organized to effectively plan team workflow and priorities to ensure timeliness of delivery.
  • The team uses strategic thinking skills, data mining techniques, and statistics to meet multiple retail project requirements.  Each member is required to think through problems to help develop productionalized solutions. 
  • Finally, the team creates stories from Big Data, working with our senior statistician to complete and refine modeling projects.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Inmar has a repository of Big Data stored on Hadoop which represent retail transactions.  Responsibilities of this role include developing sample and model data from this repository using SQL commands in Hadoop for various client projects.
  • Learn how to integrate shopper data into relevant workflow processes, with the specific aim of continuously adding value to business data.  This includes determining which variables are useful for specific analyses, using descriptive statistics for data insights, and calculating fields from raw data for modeling purposes.
  • Aid in the development of client reports using descriptive statistics as well as general calculations. 
  • Learn how to interpret and communicate results by contributing to (1) reports, (2) Excel spreadsheets, and (3) Power Point Presentations.
  • Learn how to use tools such as Tableau, SQL, Python, and R to create statistical algorithms, interpret results, and create data visualizations.
  • Own a research project centered around a retail data solution from beginning to end with guidance.  The project should incorporate much of the responsibilities outlined.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE


  • Student currently enrolled in college or university (undergrad or grad) with a graduation date of December 2021 or May 2021
  • Student must be able to commit to the entire 10 week internship (June - August 2021)
  • Verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Computer skills in Excel, SQL, Python and statistical software such as R and SAS are desirable
  • Proclivity for numbers
  • Good team building skills
  • Good analytical skills – through instruction, be able to generate actionable insight out of data.
  • Competent in Office applications (Microsoft/Google), particularly Word, Spreadsheets and Presentation applications
  • Fast learner – able to understand and quickly adopt relevant processes and methods.
  • Statistics background

USEFUL EXPERIENCE


  • Some experience in manipulating data, statistics, and problem solving
  • Some experience in presenting
