The role: 
We are seeking an experienced, talented and creative individual to join our team as a communications strategist! As part of our team, you will assist in agency-wide strategic communication planning and execution with an emphasis on the ODOT Climate Office and internal communications. You will also support communications needs in our agency’s five regions, with special emphasis on Region 3 Southwest Oregon.

A day in the life:
Internal communications
  • Play a key role in our agency’s internal communications planning efforts.
  • Provide engaging content for Inside ODOT, the news brief for employees, and other internal publications and communications.
Strategic communications
  • Develop internal and external communications designed to achieve specific public affairs goals and promote awareness and acceptance of agency programs among employees and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work with agency staff and managers, graphic artists, photographers, videographers and media.
  • Produce or assist in coordinating production of key messages, news releases, presentations, webinars, videos, newsletters, fact sheets, podcasts, blog posts and other forms of communications.
Program and region support
  • Provide communications support for regional communications issues as well as other programs as needed.
  • Assist in the training and coaching of management and staff to respond effectively to the media.
  • Write for and assist in producing external and internal publications explaining agency programs, policies and projects.
Note: Work is primarily performed in an office environment, but may require travel throughout the state, including in inclement weather. Work regularly required outside of traditional work hours.

What we need:
A bachelor's degree in business or public administration, public relations, marketing, journalism, the behavioral or social sciences or related degree and two years professional level experience in public relations or affairs.
OR
Five years of experience directly related to the position under recruitment; two of the five years must have been at the professional level.

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must possess and maintain a valid driver license and acceptable driving record. Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Strategic communications planning experience or training.
  • Media relations experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and communicate effectively.
  • Experience using innovative new methods and channels of communications.
