Summer 2021 EACE Undergraduate Research & Surveillance Division Internship

The Extremity Trauma & Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) is a unique organization within the DoD consisting of teams of researchers embedded at the point of care within multiple Military Treatment Facilities across the nation. In line with the congressionally directed mission of the EACE, the research efforts undertaken to focus on the mitigation, treatment, and rehabilitation of traumatic extremity injuries and amputations with a specific focus on translating their findings into clinical practice to improve the care of injured Service Members and Veterans. Working with TRICARE, the Military Health System, VA, and other Centers of Excellence, EACE will lead efforts to enhance collaboration between the DoD and the VA extremity trauma and amputation care providers and conduct scientific research to minimize the effects of traumatic injuries and improve clinical outcomes.

This research opportunity is within the Research & Surveillance Division of EACE and will focus on the development and sharing of scientific knowledge to optimize research capabilities and enhance the quality of life for Servicemembers and Veterans with extremity trauma and amputation. As an ORISE participant at EACE, you will experience a research environment that encourages collaboration and engagement with members of a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation center in a DoD research hospital. Under the guidance of a mentor, you can expect to participate in key education and training aspects, including exposure to various aspects of pre-clinical research by participating in ongoing collaborative research projects, data collection appropriate to existing research protocol(s), and descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. Also, you will have an opportunity to participate in the preparation of abstracts for professional conferences and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals as a way to focus on your personal career development.

Appointment Length
This appointment is a four-month summer 2021 research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant. 

Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by EACE. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications
Current undergraduate students interested in clinical research, health professions, data analytics and other related fields of study

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing, sitting, and walking

Eligibility Requirements
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only
  • Degree: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree.
