2021 Computing Sciences Summer Student Program
Spend Your Summer Learning and Earning at One of the World's Leading Centers for Computational Science!
For students majoring in Computational Science, Computer Science, Mathematics and related science and engineering fields, Berkeley Lab Computing Sciences hosts a 10-12-week (approx June 1 - August 6) research summer program that provides students with the opportunity to gain research experience. Participants will work on projects in computational research, high performance computing, high speed networking or a collaboration of each, under the guidance of one or more staff members. Due to the current pandemic, student positions will be working and managed remotely. Berkeley Lab, located in Berkeley, CA is a world leader in computing, biological, physical, materials, chemical, and energy sciences research. In summers past, students at Berkeley Lab have worked in such project areas as:
Summer students will work on projects within the Computational Research Division (CRD) or the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NESRC).
Projects are designed so that students will complete a major portion of the work during the 12-week period. This program is geared toward students between their junior and senior years who have completed core courses in Computer Science, Mathematics, and related areas of study or graduate students in any computer and computational science discipline. The exact starting date is at the mutual convenience of the students and the needs of the program.
2021 CRD Summer Students will support projects within one of the division's four departments:
Applied Mathematics Department
- Develops advanced mathematical models and efficient computational algorithms for solving a broad range of scientific and engineering problems. Areas of application of those models and algorithms include accelerator physics, astrophysics, climate, combustion, and seismic imaging.
Computational Science Department (CLS)
- Performs innovative research that enhances high-performance computational science application codes used in scientific discovery including data management and analytics for biosciences, development of high-performance computing software for chemistry and material science, and more.
Computer Science Department (CS)
- Performs innovative research that enhances high performance computational science application codes including; advanced programming systems, parallel languages, computer architecture, advanced operating systems and runtimes, benchmarking and performance modeling, performance optimization, and advanced algorithm development.
Data Science and Technology Department (DST)
- Activities range from basic and applied research to the deployment of software tools and systems. Projects span a diverse set of activities, ranging from data management; data movement; statistical, topological, and geometric analysis; computer vision; visualization; user-interface design; usability; and end-to-end data-intensive system architecture.

Requirements:
Students must be enrolled in a full-time academic program at an accredited college or university. Proof of enrollment is required. Relocation assistance and compensation for room and board is at the students' expense.
Compensation
The hourly wages up to $20.54 for undergraduate students and up to $37.28 for graduate students, depending upon years of education completed. Applicants are responsible for housing and travel expenses.
