Note from director:
My team at City of Hope is focused on providing quick turnarounds on projects for teams throughout the organization. The majority of our work is directly requested from the Chief Financial Officer. Given the high profile of our work we have an attitude of finding a way to get things done but at the same time being clear about expectations.
One common question that candidates have is what are some of the projects we are working on. Here are a few:
- Measure the financial impact of an operational process change while controlling for the impact of COVID-19.
- Estimate our market share compared to other institutions in the Los Angeles area.
- Develop models to estimate future financial revenues and identify areas to grow/contract.
- Provide statistical backing to initiatives to change the organization.
- Explore financial data to determine how operational changes can be made to better suit patients.
I am looking to build out specific skills on our team. Here are a few that come to mind.
- Ability to mentor data analysts and help them understand the nuance of statistical analysis.
- Ability to create interactable web applications using Shiny (there are other equivalents in Python).
- Ability to develop models quickly while clearly communicating with stakeholders.
- Ability to work with operational leaders to pinpoint areas of opportunity and deliver analyses to answer their questions.
Occasionally our team has a deadline that may require us to work outside of the normal 8am-5pm schedule. My best guess is that 20% of the time we have a day that requires work outside of the typical schedule. Is this something that you would be able to do?
Are you comfortable working from home? All of our team will not be working from Duarte, California. This will allow us as employees to work from anywhere (need to have a good internet connection).
Are you comfortable with projects that may not have clear objectives. For example, a team may request you to dig into an issue without knowing exactly where the problem is. This would require the ability to think critically, work with others around the organization to brainstorm, perform exploratory analysis, and communicate clearly with teams about the status and future approach. This explains a large portion of the tasks that we work on.
Given some of these details do you feel like this position would suit you well? Do you have any hesitations, reservations, or questions about the position? Is this the “flavor” of data scientist position that you are interested in?
