Associate/Sr. Associate (Data Analyst/Scientist) - Climate Intelligence

 Program Overview

RMI’s Climate Intelligence Global Program focuses on identifying opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by curating emissions and industry data and translating that into actionable insights. The Oil & Gas Solutions Initiative aims to reduce methane emissions from the natural gas value chain, aiming for an 80 percent reduction by 2050. We are also doing advanced modeling on oil and gas systems to identify greenhouse gas mitigation opportunities. We’re partnering with policy makers, financial institutions, civil society, and industry to deliver data and tools that are accurate, actionable, and real-time, for maximum impact.  

 Position Overview

RMI is looking to hire a Data Analyst/Scientist at Associate/Senior Associate level within the Oil & Gas Solutions Initiative of the Climate Intelligence Program. You should have experience wrangling with unstructured data, designing and maintaining databases, building machine learning models. The position will be filled at the associate (data analyst) or senior associate (data scientist) level depending on your  qualifications. 

 Your Key Responsibilities:  

As a Senior Associate/Associate at RMI, you will be a creative problem solver who uses their quantitative, technical, and analytical abilities to conduct compelling analysis around vital energy issues. You will collaborate with team members to craft visionary yet practical solutions for our research questions. 

The Data Scientist / Data Analyst will work under the supervision of Data Manager. Your key job responsibilities would include: 

  • Acquire and process data from disparate data sources and maintain databases / data systems that are self-consistent 
  • Develop scripts in SQL or Python to analyze data and perform specific data queries to support the work of the team  
  • Identify, analyze, and interpret trends in data sets using statistical techniques 
  • Visualize data in easy-to-understand formats using data visualization tools 
  • Carry out green house gas emission modeling throughout the oil & gas supply chain  
  • Develop reporting methods, dashboards and visual platforms for analytics and insights into the sources of greenhouse gas emissions 
  • Execute statistical analysis of multivariate spatiotemporal datasets 
  • Synthesize recommendations into clear and compelling presentations and written reports  

Minimum Qualifications  

  • An undergraduate degree in a quantitative subject such as computer science, mathematics, physics, statistics, engineering, or data science 
  • Excellent statistics skills and a strong track record of data analytics work 
  • Experience using SQL to store and manage large data sets 
  • Excellent Python skills for data analysis (e.g., Jupyter notebook, Pandas, Numpy, etc) 
  • Ability to use tools (e.g.,Tableau) to create clear, communicative data visualizations 
  • Experience analyzing and visualizing geospatial data using ArcGIS or similar software packages (e.g. QGIS) 
  • Ability to stick with a problem until a solution is found, but knowledge of when to ask for help 
  • Strong communications skills, both written and oral, and the ability to tell stories with data 
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work independently 
  • Ability to listen actively, be diplomatic, and share knowledge and information well 
  • Willingness to plunge into unfamiliar disciplines 
  • Willingness to take risks by exploring and testing new ideas 
  • A passion for making the world better  

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Strong machine learning skills and a strong track record of data science related work 
  • Excellent Python skills for data science (e.g. Scikit-Learn) or excellent skills in other data science programming languages (e.g. R) and a willingness to quickly translate those skills to Python 
  • Experience using cloud-based tools for data storage and processing (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, etc.) 
  • Experience with scalable data analysis frameworks (Apache Spark and PySpark, Hadoop, etc.) 
  • Familiarity with energy, climate, and the oil and gas industry 
  • Experience working collaboratively in global, multi-cultural team

New York NY, Oakland CA, Boulder CO, Basalt CO, Washington D.C. 

Compensation

The starting salary range for you as an Associate would be $76,000 - $82,000, and the starting salary range as a Senior Associate would be $86,000 - $93,000. Salary to be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. 
You would also have an additional 5% bonus target!
