Job Summary
This position exists to support key components of the agency’s work to understand, characterize, mitigate, and manage the human health and environmental risks from releases of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Under the general direction of the MPCA’s PFAS coordinator, with overall project goals and design established by leadership, the incumbent will implement the expansion of MPCA’s pilot PFAS inventory and protocol project.
The incumbent will lead creation of the data summary tool, building on existing pilot work, and work to ensure applicability of the data summary tool to multiple agency programs. The incumbent will work with the PFAS Coordinator and members of the agency’s PFAS lateral team to support agency programs in developing processes and tools to prioritize their work to understand and reduce sources of PFAS using the data compiled and explore through the data summary tool.
Minimum Qualifications
- This position requires knowledge of environmental science to understand the environmental setting for the data being compiled and reviewed. This is a senior level position and a degree and experience is required. A degree in data science, computer science, environmental science, or equivalent with experience. Experience must include good analytical and statistical skills with working knowledge of data analysis principles, experience with data visualization tools and software, knowledge of database structures, and data modeling.

- Associate’s degree and three years’ of experience as listed above;
- Bachelor’s degree and two years’ experience as listed above;
- Master’s degree and one year experience as listed above.
- Candidates must have good communications skills to work on teams and communicate technical environmental information to external governmental and non-governmental entities and the general public.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of PFAS as an environmental pollutant.
- Good data management skills that include the use of spreadsheets, graphical packages, statistical packages and programming languages, data management software, data quality assurances, and computer models to manage and present environmental data.
- Experience in GIS applications, Python, and/or "R" statistical software are prefer
- Ability to present an overview of the process outcomes of data compilation and review to a non-technical audience
- Team coordination and basic project management skills
- Understanding of, and experience in, one or more environmental regulatory programs (including remediation programs such as Superfund or air, water, or solid waste permitting programs).
- Knowledge of procurement and contracting process.
Physical Requirements
- Requires occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as file folders, ledgers, and small equipment. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.
