Big Data Engineering Intern
Project Name: InteRRIS®, EHMS users and customers, and general research support.
Preferred Degree: Industrial Engineering, Industrial & Systems Engineering, or Operations Research.

Project Description:
The projects’ general objectives include collecting, processing, analyzing, and reporting rail vehicle performance (including condition monitoring and defect detection data), wayside detector, and tracking inspection and maintenance data. Projects also include data analysis support of research projects. These projects are funded by TTCI’s Strategic Research Initiative (SRI) program or through the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
Primary Duties:
Support data retrieval, review, collection, and analysis of these data and reporting on results.
Minimum Qualifications:
·Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Industrial & Systems Engineering, or Operations Research.
·Extensive experience in exploratory data analysis (EDA) and subjective statistical test analysis (coursework, research projects, or job experience).
· Experience using Microsoft Office software.
·A strong foundation using Minitab, Statistica, Microsoft Excel (data organization and analysis, functions, charts/plots, and basic programing) or similar using R, Python, or similar analysis software.
·Willingness to learn about railroad operations, rolling stock and maintenance concepts, literature review, multi-tasking, and strong communication & leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
·Working towards or having a master’s degree. Coursework would include engineering statistics, quality control & reliability, operations research, operations planning, project management, data analysis, and scheduling & sequencing. Extensive experience using Minitab, Statistica, R, Python, and/or MATLAB
Length of service:
These projects are ongoing. The intern’s term can be for the summer only (end August 2022) or, if available, continue part-time through the fall (end December 2022). This position is allocated for and is expected to consume 100% of the intern’s work hours.
Project Deliverable:
Assist project engineers with the following:
· Analysis/observation/interpretation of rail vehicle performance data.
· Development of test plans and procedures.
· Analysis/observation/interpretation of test data.
·Drafting portions of the analysis reports and presentations.
