The Clean Transportation (CT) program at UCS is a team of scientists and analysts, along with campaign, fundraising, and communications staff, who work on transforming our transportations systems—including cars, public transit, and freight—to be equitable, clean, and sustainable.

 

Trucks and buses are currently a leading source of harmful air pollution with tailpipe pollution from commercial trucks taking an outsized toll on public health. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Accelerating the adoption of zero-emission trucks and lowering tailpipe pollution from fossil fuel-powered trucks could significantly reduce unhealthy smog and air toxics, cut down climate pollution, and result in significant public health benefits and savings.

 

As the electrification of cars, trucks, and buses accelerates, current mining practices for materials needed to produce batteries and the end-of-life batteries treatment remain major, unresolved concerns. Battery recycling and reuse are one meaningful way to address supply chain and lifecycle concerns and can be done in a way that complements work being done by including other stakeholders on human rights, environmental justice, and other issues.

 

CT is seeking a Senior Analyst who can help us take on truck pollution and work toward a sustainable electric transportation future. Working in a team that includes policy and campaign staff, your job will be to contribute your analyses on electrifying freight truck fleets and electric vehicle battery reuse/recycling. As part of the team, you will use your work to advocate for policies that will lead to zero-emission trucks and buses, and a more sustainable lifecycle for electric vehicle batteries.

 

Responsibilities

·        Conduct technical and policy analysis to inform advocacy in support of UCS transportation policy agendas, with a particular emphasis on electric trucks and battery recycling and reuse

·        Help create public-facing reports, fact sheets, blog posts, and other products aimed at influencing key decision-makers, along with the general public

·        Participate in the development of UCS policy positions

·        Prepare regulatory and legislative comments and testimony

·        Develop and recommend policy and regulatory proposals

·        Meet with policymakers and policy stakeholders

·        Represent UCS and serve as a spokesperson on technical and policy issues in public forums and in the media

·        Advocate for the UCS clean transportation policy and regulatory agenda with legislative and administrative bodies, non-governmental organizations, and business groups

·        Collaborate with members of the Clean Transportation team and other UCS programs and departments as needed

The Senior Analyst position requires strong quantitative and analytical skills, with a preference for candidates with expertise in electric trucks and buses and/or electric vehicle battery lifecycle issues. General knowledge of transportation, energy, and climate policy is also required. Candidates should be skilled in communication with technical experts, policymakers, and the public. Media experience is a plus. Training or experience in supervision and project management is also desirable.

 

A Master’s degree in a relevant area (science, engineering, economics, public policy), as well as 5-7 years of relevant experience, are required. Prior experience in regulatory or legislative processes, advocacy skills, project management, and policy analysis and design preferred. Proficiency in word processing and computer spreadsheets is required, and experience with energy and transportation models is strongly desired.

 

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

This is a full-time position based in UCS’s Washington, D.C. office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is around S80,000. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
