Suicide Prevention Research Scientist

The Injury and Violence Prevention Branch (IVPB) saves lives, prevents trauma, promotes resiliency, and ensures that all Californians can live free of violence and injury by supporting behavioral, environmental, systems, and social change. IVPB administers programs and conducts epidemiology and surveillance projects for the prevention of unintentional (accidental) and intentional (violent) injuries.

 

The Office of Suicide Prevention aims to support suicide prevention efforts across the state through state level assessments of suicide prevention policies and practices, surveillance, and dissemination of data to inform prevention efforts, and reporting on progress to reduce rates of suicide. 

 

Under general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor I, Chief of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Section, the Research Scientist (RS) III is responsible for the independent development and implementation of epidemiological research, evaluation, and surveillance that contributes to the Office of Suicide Prevention. The RS III will serve as a scientific advisor/consultant for the Office of Suicide Prevention and will inform the department and stakeholders statewide on the Office’s suicide prevention efforts. The RS III will use appropriate research methods to evaluate data sources, develop research indicators and tools, conduct ongoing surveillance, conduct analyses, and develop materials for dissemination of data/findings to diverse audiences. The incumbent is also required to work effectively with multi-disciplinary professionals, community based organizations, and individuals. The RS III will provide authoritative scientific guidance and consultation to other scientists and staff contributing to research, surveillance, and prevention of injuries.
