Airport Operations Trainee

This is administrative and operational work at the trainee level, on an assigned shift at the Philadelphia International Airport, performing assignments designed to further develop the management skills required to perform a variety of airport management activities. Employees in this class participate in monitoring airfield, terminal, landside operations, security, safety, ground transportation, and other activities related to the welfare of passengers, airlines, tenants and the general public. Assignments vary in nature and increase in difficulty with the objective of the employee advancing to higher-level airport administrative positions. This is shift work and employees are required to work weekends and holidays. Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative superior.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Performs a variety of assignments designed to develop proficiency in airport administra­tion.
           Inspects airfield facilities, including grounds, runways, fencing, taxiways, aircraft aprons, gate assignments, and service roadways to assure safety, security, and efficiency of operations and the expeditious flow of aircraft; monitors airfield activities during assigned shift; arranges escort and/or performs duties for persons using airfield; attends training seminars.
           Inspects terminal buildings and associated areas such as loading bridges, aircraft parking areas and baggage claim facilities; monitors terminal and grounds conditions to ensure public safety and security of the airport physical plant; monitors the activities of ground transportation providers to ensure compliance with regulations and procedures; monitors and tests airport security system; investigates door alarms; performs fingerprint checks; may conduct safety and security training; investigates door alarms.
            Participates in studies to evaluate airport issues, such as safety program, aviation law, airport environmental concerns, and airport operations and maintenance; analyzes airport policies, procedures and activities; obtains and analyzes data on such air services issues as federal regulation; prepares detailed reports and recommendations based on findings.
           Issues notices to airmen (NOTAMS) and airport advisories concerning field conditions.
           Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests. Applications submitted by candidates for this class will be reviewed based on training and experience requirements as approved on 4/19.)
Option 1:
EDUCATION: Completion of a bachelor's degree program from an accredited college or university with major course work in aviation management, flight management, commercial aviation or a related field.
 
Option 2:
EDUCATION: Completion of a bachelor's degree program from an accredited college or university.
 AND
EXPERIENCE: Completion of an internship with the Philadelphia Department of Commerce’s Division of Aviation.
 
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
 
           Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.
 
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES
 
           Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania within 90 days after appointment, and during tenure of employment as an Airport Operations Trainee, if required by work assignment.
           Must be able to pass and maintain SIDA (Security Identification Display Area) and AOA (Airfield Operations Area) clearance.

ANTICIPATED ELIGIBILITY
Candidates who meet all eligibility requirements within 6 months of the application deadline (July 14, 2022) will be admitted to this examination. Successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list but may not be hired or promoted until all requirements have been satisfied.
