Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) is seeking an organized, professional, and results oriented individual to serve as Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Program Data Coordinator. This position will direct, coordinate and review the production of weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual deliverables to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Responsibilities include reviewing the preparation of agency statistical data, evaluating regression models, writing data analysis reports for diverse audiences, and working with BLS and other internal and external groups to resolve issues. This position provides a great opportunity for someone who has a strong knowledge of state or federal statistical data reporting and compliance and is dedicated to implementing data modeling best practices. Job Responsibilities

  • Under administrative direction, serves as Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Program Data Coordinator for the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) Economic Information & Analysis (EI&A) Division
  • Provides leadership and direction in the development of statewide and local area labor force statistics, employment, and wage data to meet federal and state requirements for Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Program deliverables for the State of Illinois
  • Serves as full line supervisor
  • Coordinates research and analysis of statewide and local area data and development of customized reports
  • As directed, serves as liaison between for the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) and external organizations including but not limited to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for issues related to BLS Program Deliverables
  • Performs activities related to the certification of Targeted Employment Areas (TEAs) under federal EB-5 (Immigrant Investor) visa program
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, preferably including courses in business or public administration and advanced courses in economics, statistics, mathematics, database design, computer programming, business administration or a closely related field
  2. Requires three (3) years of professional experience producing statistical data for application to public policy

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

  1. Possession of a master's degree in economics, statistics, mathematics or closely related field with graduate level courses in economics and/or statistics
  2. Two (2) years of experience performing statistical analysis of labor, employment, and/or wage data
  3. Experience in development and application of statistical methods and techniques
  4. Intermediate or Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Access
  5. Two (2) years of professional experience performing statistical data reporting to meet federal or state agency guidelines and requirements
  6. Two (2) years of professional experience in the use of R, Statistical Analysis Software (SAS), or related software programs to perform statistical analysis and interpretation of large data sets
  7. Professional experience working with U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics program reporting systems
  8. One (1) year of experience supervising staff, including directing, training and coordinating the activities of subordinates and writing performance evaluations
  9. Experience speaking to various groups to convey policy, procedures and statistical data information in a manner easily understood by diverse audiences
  10. Experience with the grievance and discipline processes contained in bargaining unit contracts


Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires ability to travel occasionally, including overnight stays
