FELLOWSHIP TOPIC
The Emerging Markets Sovereign team is looking for a graduate student for the summer of 2022 to be based in Boston or London to work on the following topic: Climate Considerations in Macroeconomic Analysis. The main objective of the summer fellowship is to understand and extend the incorporation of climate risk and climate mitigation in the countries we invest in, assessing the role of climate-oriented policy on the country’s creditworthiness and ESG (environmental, social, governance; sustainability) performance. Many emerging markets are stuck in a catch-22 of climate responsibility and growth orientation, asked to be global citizens in the fight against climate change while working to sustainably develop and meet social and economic needs. There are many facets of this challenge, and many ways to incorporate it into macro and ESG analysis. Some key paths include the consideration of fiscal policy in the decarbonisation of these economies, the quantification of financial stability risks from climate transition, and the study of how carbon taxes impact balance sheets in the public and private spheres. The fellow will explore some or all of these topics through a case study and literature review approach, as well as by examining climate data from international and national sources.

SKILLS
The candidate should have training in macroeconomics and econometrics / statistics. They should be comfortable working with data in Excel at a minimum, but data analysis abilities beyond Excel would be a bonus. They should be familiar with climate considerations in developing countries and an ability to examine different perspectives and approaches to climate risk and macro analysis. Studies in energy, environment, international development, and political analysis would be a great benefit.

PROCESS
Only graduate applicants will be considered. Deadline for application is Friday, 21 February 2022. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted shortly after that for interviews. Applying to more than one fellowship is possible- please apply to each position of interest.
