General Summary: This full-time, hands-on position is responsible for planning, planting, maintaining, and harvesting Farm Corps gardens, coordination of Farm Corp staff & educational activities, management of 15 acre historic farm which includes buildings & ground maintenance, executing forest management plans, assistance with management of animals, and coordination of supply orders.

Job Description:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Property Management

  1. Create system improvement plans for short and long-term ground maintenance, including forest management plan and garden plans
  2. Attend and advise Buildings and Grounds meetings
  3. Manage Maintenance budget and Farm Corp budget
  4. Supervise & evaluate Farm Corp Assistant, Maintenance worker, and seasonal Farm Corp crew
  5. Collaborate with the part-time maintenance worker to prioritize tasks and resources
  6. Collaborate with the seasonal Farm Corp Assistant to plan gardens and hire crew
  7. Support and create an annual calendar of property management tasks including building maintenance, animals, and landscaping.
  8. Assist with management of animals; coordination of animal feed & supplies
  9. Manage quotes for projects and contracted work
  10. Control invasive species on the property
  11. Arrange volunteer ‘work days’, direct & work along side volunteers in maintaining the property

  • Farm Corp Management

  1. Ability to do hands-on work, planning, preparing beds, planting, maintaining, and harvesting Eco-J gardens; coordinate or perform any farm work that isn’t completed by the crew
  2. Connect with nonprofits, community centers and other organizations, as well as potential supporters and donors
  3. Market, Interview, Hire & Evaluate seasonal Farm Corp college crew and highschool crew
  4. Coordinate cooking demonstrations, farmer’s markets, and other community outreach events
  5. Plan educational sessions relevant to: organic farming (soil basics, weed management, etc.) food insecurity / food justice issues, cooking / baking, job skills, and leadership development
  6. Plan, supervise, and facilitate day-to-day activities of crew, including but not limited to:
  • Farm work
  • Animal care / chores
  • Farmer’s markets
  • Educational components
  • Talks for Summer camps
  • Cooking demonstrations
  • Trips to other farms

  1. Offer constructive feedback (both informal and structured) to crew members and crew leaders
  2. Administer pre-survey and post-survey to measure students’ growth
  3. Oversee and maintain evaluation activities/outcomes for applicable grants
  4. Collaborate with Program Manager for vision/direction of Farm Corp program in line with Programming section of EJC strategic plan
  5. Attend staff meetings
  6. Lead planning and implementation of food-related events including ‘Farm to Table’ fundraiser; including forming relationships with local restaurants
  7. Occasional help with field trips and tours

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  1. Bachelor’s degree in sustainable agriculture, crop science, horticulture, botany, forestry, education or related field; Equivalent experience accepted
  2. 2-3 years experience in gardening using no-till and organic practices
  3. Knowledge of buildings and grounds maintenance and landscaping, preferably permaculture background.
  4. Previous experience supervising staff and working with volunteers.
  5. Ability to teach skills in farming, cooking, and leadership.
  6. Willingness to help manage animal care – prior experience is preferable.
  7. Strong professional skills such as the ability to develop positive interpersonal relationships and give and receive constructive feedback.
  8. Ability to work effectively as a team member.
  9. Ability to independently multi-task to complete projects.
  10. Strong organization, communication, time management, and leadership skills.
  11. Computer skills: competency in Microsoft Office suite, database entry.
  12. Desire to collaborate with other organizations and farms
  13. Passion for food justice and building stronger communities

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  1. Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, including the ability to walk significant distances, stand for extended periods, lift moderate weights, and stand and stoop. Ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on slippery or erratic surfaces.
  2. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  3. Ability to work as a team member.
  4. Ability to manage a variety of personalities.
  5. Ability to be pleasant with others on the job and display a cooperative attitude.
  6. Willingness and ability to do hands-on outdoor work: grounds and animal care.
  7. Patience, perseverance, flexibility, and good humor.
  8. Reliable, responsible and dependable in fulfilling obligations

Additional Requirements:
  1. Valid driver’s license.
  2. Valid insurance if using own vehicle for Eco-Justice Center business.
  3. Successful completion of a background check, physical exam and drug test.

Salary: $36,000/year
