Military Health and Performance Research Data Analyst Fellowship
The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), located in Natick, Massachusetts, is offering a post-master’s fellowship in public health, epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, or a relevant field.
What will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant, you will join a multidisciplinary team of physiologists, epidemiologists, data analysts, and Army personnel to investigate risk factors that support warfighter health and performance and reduce musculoskeletal injury risk. This research will primarily focus on evaluating human performance and the factors that influence it, with an emphasis on women's health and musculoskeletal injury risk.
This learning experience will provide you with knowledge and understanding in conducting research in military and civilian environments and provide a platform for you to use your current knowledge within the field.

What is the anticipated start date?
USARIEM is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
Appointments are initially for one year with the option to extend the appointment for up to four additional years, contingent upon project needs and funding availability.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have a minimum of a Master’s of Public Health, Biostatistics, Statistics, or an equivalent degree with an emphasis in epidemiology, biostatistics or data science. Candidates who possess a Ph.D. degree are also encouraged to apply. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Highly competitive applicants will have the following knowledge and skills:
- Knowledge of how to use descriptive and analytical statistics including parametric and nonparametric tests and cross sectional and longitudinal statistical modeling for ecologic, cohort, and case control studies
- Experience in applying traditional and novel statistical and epidemiological methods to analyze relations between risk factors and health outcomes, including time to event analyses, prediction modeling and absolute risk modeling
- Proficiency in SAS programming language
- Experience with R programming language and SPSS in general
- Experience communicating with scientific collaborators and writing scientific reports
- Experience in using electronic health records (ICD-9/10 codes) for research purposes
- Knowledge of and/or experience with research clinical research and database management
U.S. citizenship and travel are required.
The successful applicant will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the host facility, including but not limited to COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing vaccination).

The United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), located in Natick, Massachusetts, is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter health and performance science and its applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, and nutrition research. The Military Nutrition Division conducts research on nutritional issues affecting the health and mission-readiness of military personnel, and supports the US Army Surgeon General’s responsibilities as the Department of Defense’s executive agent for nutrition research. About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
