The Hardware Research and Technology Laboratory (HRTL) at PARC, a Xerox company, is a group of innovative scientists and engineers who invent and develop new technologies for future commercialization. Research in HRTL includes 3D printing, sensor systems for the internet of things (IoT), carbon capture technology, cleantech, applications of artificial intelligence, robotics and much more. We are looking for an experimentalist to help us meet critical technical milestones on our micro assembler technology team. PARC’s micro assembler is a manufacturing tool research project which uses electric fields to micro-manipulate small semiconductor chips which are then transferred to a substrate. Because this system is massively parallelizable (i.e., can move many chips at the same time), it has the potential to be a fundamentally new additive manufacturing tool for high chip count systems such as micro LED displays, large area sensors, IOT devices, and systems that require heterogeneous materials integration. The work is very interdisciplinary, involving precision micromechanical systems, image processing, thin film electronics, software control systems and algorithms, microfluidics, transfer interfaces, and electrophoretic/dielectrophoretic physics. This job will be most satisfying for candidates who are eager to learn and apply new skills to a wide variety of projects both independently and as part of a team.
- Develop experimental processes and hardware for the micro assembler project
- Design and execute experiments to troubleshoot system physics, mechanics, electronics, and software.
- Identify key system problems and propose, develop, and implement solutions.
- Communicate results to other staff and groups within the lab.
- Explore new areas beyond the micro assembler and build expertise to augment a wide range of efforts in the lab.
- PhD in physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, bioengineering, or related fields.
- Strong experimental skills
- Experience working with and troubleshooting complex electromechanical systems
- Experience using and troubleshooting custom software
- Experience working in a research environment
- Creativity and good communication skills
- The successful candidate must be able to meet the requirements under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
