FDA Research Fellowship in 5G-enabled Medical Extended Reality

*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis.

A research opportunity is available in the Division of Biomedical Physics, Office of Science and Engineering Labs (OSEL), Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) located in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The objective of the research project is to develop a test method for evaluating the connectivity aspects of 5G-enabled medical extended reality (MXR) devices. This includes the development of computational models of the network traffic and quality of service (QoS) requirements for data streams in MXR systems, building a test bed that integrates 5G network connectivity in representative MXR use case(s), and developing a test setup and test vectors to support the safe and effective use of MXR devices.

The participant will engage in hands-on research including configuring and operating various commercial grade 5G network equipment and MXR devices. This includes the development of test scripts for generating and capturing network traffic, applying statistical methods for modeling QoS, and designing and evaluating test vectors for end-to-end 5G connectivity. The participant will also engage in writing scientific reports and preparing publications.
