Research Scientist | Directed Evolution
Description
M13 Therapeutics is a MIT-founded gene therapy startup developing a next-generation platform
for redoseable in-vivo gene delivery. Our company is harnessing the human phageome to
engineer a diverse set of nanoparticles, called phage-derived particles (PDPs), to deliver
genomic medicines to human cells with high efficiency and specificity.
PDPs are highly engineerable scaffolds capable of multi-functional capsid display of cell
type-specific targeting and endosomal escape moieties. Furthermore, PDPs enable the
packaging of minimal phage DNA (mpDNA) cargos exceeding 20 kb, translating into the ability
to package >99% of human genes as a therapeutic.
Our mission is to treat human diseases and create impactful science in the field of genomic
medicines. We are an early-stage startup where employees will have the advantage of growing
with the company and shaping our culture and vision.

Summary
M13 Therapeutics seeks a team-oriented, organized, and creative Research Scientist. As an
early key member of M13 Therapeutics, you will help build our in-vitro and in-vivo directed
evolution platform to identify lead PDPs for efficient and cell type-specific transduction. Your
work will reside at the intersection of computational biology, high-throughput screening, and
disease biology to establish novel workflows to optimize the performance of M13’s PDP capsids
for specific therapeutic indications. The ideal candidate should have experience working in a
fast-paced, collaborative environment to advance their own research goals while also effectively
contributing to matrixed project teams.
Key Responsibilities
● Design, execute, and troubleshoot assays to optimize biological properties of M13 phage
capsids to meet indication-specific performance criteria in close collaboration with
disease biology & platform team
● Conduct high-throughput screens using directed evolution, pooled barcoding methods,
and arrayed screening approaches to optimize the activity of PDP capsids in mammalian
systems
● Establish molecular biology & cloning workflows to generate diverse PDP variant
libraries for high-throughput functional screens
● Provide oversight and mentorship to direct reports
● Analyze data and maintain laboratory notebooks to ensure documentation of
experimental results
● Communicate data and results to research teams and other company forums
● Contribute to building a culture that embraces M13 Therapeutics’ values
Preferred Qualifications
● PhD or equivalent in the area of biomedical engineering, synthetic biology, biochemistry,
structural biology, or related bioscience field
● 0-3 years of relevant post-doc work experience; industry experience and experience
managing direct reports strongly preferred
● Hands-on experience in protein engineering and methods for directed evolution in
mammalian cell systems is essential
● In-depth knowledge of molecular biology & library cloning techniques
● Familiarity with standard mammalian cell culture techniques, including methods for gene
delivery
● Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and communication skills
● Must enjoy working in a fast-paced dynamic and highly-collaborative environment
● Excellent collaboration, communication, and interpersonal skills are required to work with
cross-departmental teams/functions to drive discovery projects
● Demonstrated experience in protein purification, biochemical assay development is a
plus
