Remote Work is available with only 1-2 days per month of physical presence in the office required. When physical presence is required, employees are responsible for travel expenses to their office site. Additional Hybrid Telework and Alternative Work Week Schedules are also available.

Under general direction from the Research Scientist Supervisor II (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) (RSS II) in the Analytics and Data Section (ADS), the Research Scientist Supervisor I (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) (RSS I) (E/B) is considered a working-level supervisor responsible for the Cost and Quality Analysis Group (CQAG). The incumbent provides administrative guidance and direction to subordinates; plans, organizes, and directs major scientific research studies and public health or healthcare investigations of a broad scientific scope and complexity; makes independent decisions in the incumbent’s specific scientific field; may serve as an advisor or consultant to other lower-level scientists conducting studies in the incumbent’s specific scientific field of expertise.
The RSS I (E/B) directs staff in preparing and publishing healthcare-related reports and de-identified data tables, graphics, and visualizations for use by internal and external stakeholders, including hospitals, researchers, policy makers, health care purchasers and payers, consumers and consumer groups, and the media. The RSS I (E/B) also represents the Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) Healthcare Analytics Branch (HAB) on federal workgroups and committees related to healthcare data (claims and administrative data), data quality, data linkages, analyses, and results. The RSS I interprets reports for the media, statewide professional societies, hospitals, health plans, and other stakeholder groups and presents original scientific research at state and national research forums.
In the HCAI work environment staff may handle confidential patient data. Specific statutes and regulations and HCAI policies and procedures govern the collection, storage, disclosure and use of confidential data. The employee is responsible for the safe and secure handling of this data in compliance with these policies and procedures.

Either I
Experience: Three years of experience in the California state service performing scientific research duties comparable to those of a Research Scientist II in the stated specialty or a closely related field. Research involved in the completion of the dissertation required for the doctoral degree may be substituted for one year of the required experience. and
Education: Possession of a master's degree in the stated specialty or in a closely related field.
Or II
Experience: One year of experience in the California state service performing scientific research duties comparable to those of a Research Scientist III in the stated specialty or a closely related field. and
Education: Possession of a master's degree in the stated specialty or in a closely related field.
Or III
Experience: Two years of progressively responsible research experience in the stated specialty or a closely related field. This experience must have included either: (1) Experience with major responsibility for the design and execution of a complex, highly specialized research project; or (2) Experience in the coordination and direction of a complex and difficult research effort. At least one year of this experience must be at a level of responsibility equivalent to that of a Research Scientist III. and
Education: Possession of a doctoral degree in the stated specialty or a closely related field.
