Job Summary
Involves technical acumen for planning, designing, developing, implementing and administering data-based systems that acquire, prepare, store and provide access to data and metadata. Maintains and optimizes systems and migrates data and systems as needed. Ensures integrity and completeness of data and workflow, manages and / or develops data practices, databases and information systems as well as guidelines, dictionaries, registries and / or services. May include interpretation of scientific research data artifacts as well as mediation across science and technology domains and long-term data care. As information architect and data steward, designs systems, data products and / or data production processes while focusing on data curation, data exchange, data security, data integrity and information environments. (Re)evaluates frameworks, strategies, standards and standards-making activities. May involve work with a project-level data repository, a center or an archive.


Experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems / issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.


The position functions as the lead statistical analyst for the UCSF Division of Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery. The research data analyst will primarily be responsible for performing complex statistical analyses and providing sophisticated support for developing publication & presentation. The analyst will use skills as experienced research professional with an indepth understanding of biostatistics and research software programming techniques to oversee and conduct the statistical component of new and ongoing protocols. The analyst will work closely with research team members (e.g. principal investigators, fellows, junior analysts) to support the conduct of the research. The individual will help manage, analyze, interpret, and report on statistical findings. Specifically, the individual will conduct complex statistical analyses and prepare findings for presentation at professional meetings and publications in medical journals. This position entails more self-directed and novel work, especially in research and methods development, taking on a mentorship role within the team in areas of expertise such as informatics, statistics and special programming challenges using very large databases across novel media. The individual must be detail-oriented and thorough, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and proactively communicate with research team members. The individual must demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions and manage multiple projects simultaneously with competing priorities.
Department Description
The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold: to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost-effective, yet compassionate, and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. Care of patients is what attracted our faculty and residents to surgery, and it continues to be our main focus. The Department is comprised of eight divisions: Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular & Endovascular Surgery. Our surgeons provide care at locations throughout greater San Francisco including UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus (Moffitt-Long Hospital), UCSF Medical Center at Mt. Zion, UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay (UCSF Bakar Cancer Hospital and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital-San Francisco), San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, San Francisco VA Medical Center, and Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland. Our residents rotate through UCSF Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, and California Pacific Medical Center. The Division of Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery is comprised of four programs: Cardiac Surgery, General Thoracic Surgery, Heart Transplant, and Lung Transplant. It also leads the multidisciplinary Thoracic Surgery &Oncology Program based at UCSF Mt. Zion campus. The Cardiothoracic faculty and staff provide services for patients at UCSF's Parnassus and Mt. Zion Campuses, San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SFVAMC), San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), and St. Mary's Hospital. Our reputation for excellence in the clinical setting, stellar outcomes, and dedication to providing concierge customer service, informs our patients’ decisions to come to UCSF. The Division has a fully accredited Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) training program in cardiothoracic surgery that consists of rotations in adult cardiac surgery, pediatric cardiac surgery, and thoracic surgery. Our commitment to research and discovery in areas such as heart failure and lung cancer is best evidenced within our Cardiac Biomechanics, Cardiothoracic Translational Research, and Thoracic Oncology Laboratories. The cardiothoracic surgery Division is proud to work with our industry partners as well as the National Institutes of Health is seeking to translate clinical discoveries into the practice setting where such work is truly meaningful.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Three (3) or more years of related work experience. Ability to represent relevant information in abstract models. Thorough knowledge of relevant rules and regulations. Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated service orientation skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Strong organizational skills. Strong analytical and design skills, including the ability to abstract information requirements from real-world processes to understand information flows in computer systems. Ability to represent relevant information in abstract models. Critical thinking skills and attention to detail. Proficient in statistical software packages (SAS and Stata) or related software. Ability to represent relevant information in abstract models.
 
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to prepare data models unassisted. Familiarity with data model patterns in one or more common business or academic domains. Familiarity with logical data design and data mapping or data conversion. Familiarity with data quality and governance issues and requirements. Thorough knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards.
