JOB DESCRIPTION – Development Director

Job Title: Development Director
Reports to: Co-Executive Directors
Classification: Exempt
Salary Range: $80,000-$135,000
Location: Fresno Preferred; Remote Work Options Available

Position Summary

The Development Director (Director) is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all of Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability’s fundraising, including revenue streams such as grants and contracts, as well as donors and special events. The Director will work closely with Co-Executive Directors and Director of Operations to oversee fundraising efforts. 

This position is an exempt, management-level position. The position requires the regular exercise of discretion and independent judgment. The position is responsible for supervising and evaluating employees.

Duties & Responsibilities

The essential functions (i.e., the fundamental job duties of the position) are as follows:

Development (85%)
  • Lead efforts related to institutional fund development including identification of potential funding sources, submission of grant proposals, and submission of grant reports
  • Lead efforts related to contracts for service including identification of potential contracting opportunities, submission of contract proposals, and submission of reports for services rendered
  • Ensure progress towards meeting grant and contract deliverables in collaboration with Director of Operations and Co-Executive Directors
  • Work with Co-Executive Directors to develop and maintain an individual giving program, including identification of new donors and strengthening of relationships with existing donors 
  • Lead identification of other potential funding sources
  • Oversee database tracking fund development
  • Oversee planning, publicity, and implementation of fundraising events
  • Generate strategies to increase revenue and donor loyalty
  • Support participation of staff members in development efforts 
  • Communicate fundraising goals throughout the organization and equip team members to reach them
  • Work with Communications Director to elevate Leadership Counsel’s profile and development potential 

Administrative (5%)
  • Support growing Leadership Counsel operations and development team, which is responsible for day-to-day operations, financial management, fundraising, special events

Program Engagement (5%)
  • Develop and maintain relationship with the community and organizational partners
  • Participate in select meetings, gatherings, and convenings
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other key stakeholders
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the organization’s programmatic goals and activities

Other Duties (5%)
  • Other duties as assigned by Co-Executive Directors.

Skills and Qualifications

The following qualifications are required for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience

Prior Experience:
  • 1-2 years demonstrated experience working with and on behalf of low-income communities
  • 3-5 years demonstrated experience in development

  • Ability to work regular evening and weekend hours
  • Ability to travel within the State of California including throughout California and up to 1-2 times per year out of state
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Office Suite
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills

  • Access to a personal vehicle and insurance coverage
  • Comfort with working with residents and organizations from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Ability to drive frequently and for up to 8 hours in a day to community meetings, hearings, conferences, and other related activities, ability to work long days occasionally up to 14 hours in a day, ability to conduct door-to-door outreach and conduct meetings, lifting materials and supplies such as chairs, easels, tables. Typically, these will weigh 30 pounds or less. Position involves remaining in a stationary position for most of the workday. The employee is regularly required to move or remain in a stationary position. This position requires the ability to perform clerical duties in the office and operate a computer and related office machinery. The employee is occasionally required to move self. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to observe details at close range or from a distance. Other abilities required by this job include the ability to communicate information and ideas so that others understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

This position typically functions indoors in an office environment with light to moderate noise associated with business office equipment. The position may involve travel for meetings and events.

Employees share office space with one or more other staff members. Out-of-office meetings will include meetings in other offices, in community centers, in homes, in government buildings, and outside.

This position engages in functions both indoors and outdoors, in office environments with light to moderate noise, and in community gathering venues, private homes, or government buildings with both small and large groups of people where noise levels may be higher than in a typical office setting.
